The world famous racing ostriches are returning to Dixie Stampede Branson in 2013! Beginning February 22, Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede will open its 19th season in the Ozarks and the return of the ostriches is one of the many things guests can look forward to during the show.
Ostrich racing was a funny and popular segment of the Dixie Stampede in years past, so Dolly Parton thought bringing back the crowd-pleasing race was a no-brainer. In a Dixie Stampede press release she stated, “I want my guests to have some down home foot stompin’ excitement. Part of the fun at my Dixie Stampede is giving the audience the unexpected, and these big birds are that, it’s just amazing!”
Ostriches are 6-foot tall, 300-pound birds that can race around the arena at speeds in excess of 40 miles per hour. Though they can’t fly, ostriches are fleet, strong runners. They may use their wings as “rudders” to help them change direction while running. An ostrich’s powerful, long legs can cover 10 to 16 feet in a single stride.
During the “World Famous Ostrich Races”, performers at Dixie Stampede will ride the ostriches around the arena as they battle for first place. Guests will be amazed at the performer’s ability to ride on top of these speedy birds in competition.
Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede is a unique dinner and show experience set in a giant 35,000-square-foot arena featuring 32 magnificent horses, a stampede of buffalo, thrilling horsemanship, romance, and audience participation.
