Silver Dollary City Branson Lines Up New Acts for Festivals

Silver Dollar City presents its biggest show year ever with more than a dozen blue-ribbon production shows, including two never before presented in the United States.

“From a show perspective, there isn’t a time of year when we are not offering something spectacular,” said Brad Schroeder, director of special events. “Silver Dollar City is like a 50-acre performing arts hall, constantly presenting the best shows we can find worldwide, and those we create — ever changing, always adding.”

The theme park’s new production shows — never before presented in the United States — include the Zhejiang Balancing Monks of China for World-Fest and the Swedish Supergroup JEERK for KidsFest.

Opening with World-Fest on April 4, The Zhejiang Balancing Monks of China bring to Silver Dollar City an all-new show of incredible acrobatic proportions. An internationally-acclaimed troupe of two dozen acrobats and head-balancing monks demonstrate awe-inspiring mastery of body and mind.

This unique show is being created and co-produced by LOVE Productions of New York City and Silver Dollar City.

Rhythm and dance artistry stomps to the stage for KidsFest as Silver Dollar City presents the Swedish Supergroup JEERK. Five performers use their percussion skills, rhythmic body movements and an array of novelty props to drum, dance and crash their way through this one-of-a-kind stage show, making its U.S. debut at the park June 6.

Major festival productions include the new 28-member Peruvian music and dance troupe Jallmay, the Feet of Fire Irish dance show, an original VeggieTales live stage show, the Magic of Peter Gossamer, the All American Cowgirl Chicks trick riders, Wings Over Missouri birds of flight, the Headin’ West musical drama presenting the adventure of America’s western expansion, and the acclaimed original production, A Dickens’ Christmas Carol.

Silver Dollar City’s new Culinary & Craft School offers guests more behind-the-scenes experiences in 2009, presenting culinary techniques with festival flavor, such as international specialties during World-Fest, and homemade sauces and side dishes during Bluegrass & BBQ, plus classes on legendary Silver Dollar City home-style cooking.

Classes are offered within the 3,000 square-foot timber frame building with its state-of-the-art kitchen showroom and Craftsmen’s Showcase room furnished with the work of the park’s expert craftsmen.

Celebrate Christmas at Silver Dollar City in Branson

When Pete Herschend and his brother Jack (whose family founded Silver Dollar City in Branson, Mo., in 1960) started their Old Time Christmas back in 1988, it was on a lark.

“We called it the 12 Days of Christmas, and honestly we weren’t at all sure anyone would show up,” Pete Herschend said. “But we thought it sounded good, and we knew it could be good. And lo and behold, a lot of them showed up. There are some families who started coming in 1988 and they have been back every year.”

One recent visitor was Noel Perkin, a Springfield, Mo., native who visited the park as a little girl, worked there in the ’80s, and now takes her 6-year-old son, Drew, every Christmas. “It was magical then and it’s magical now,” she said.

This year’s 20th-anniversary celebration includes more than four million lights spread across the park’s 40 acres, a handful of Christian-themed shows, a Frosty the Snowman musical, a steam train, a five-story special effects-laden Christmas tree and — when the weather holds out — a few impressive roller coasters from which one can soak in all those lights.

This season also marks the premiere of the park’s culinary school, where guests can make cookies, pies and holiday stews.

Silver Dollar City Voted Best in U.S.

Silver Dollar City leads the Web site “America’s Best and Top Ten list” as having the best Christmas light show in America.

It is the fourth straight year that Silver Dollar City has been listed No. 1 by the Web site.

Spokeswoman Crystal Hedrick says the theme park has also been recognized by Good Morning America, CNN.com and recently by the Travel Channel.

“We’re happy to be at the top of the list again this year. It’s quite an honor,” Hedrick said.

Silver Dollar City is joined by the Oglebay Festival of lights in Wheeling, W.V., Fantasy of Lights in Pine Mountain, Ga., the Smoky Mountain Winterfest in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and the Trail of Lights in Austin, Texas, rounding out the top five.

Seven other displays were given honorable mentions led by the 100 miles of Lights in Virginia Beach, Va.

During a special event at Silver Dollar City on Friday, Edward Grinnan, editor in chief of Guideposts magazine, was in awe by what he saw.

“The Christmas lights here are breathtaking. I’ve never been here before and it is amazing,” he said.

Silver Dollar City is famous for its holiday lights and five-story tall special effects Christmas tree that draws thousand of visitors every year.

“We always try to come up with something different every year,” Hedrick said. “This year we went green and used more energy efficient LED lights.”

Since 1996, America’s Best and Top Ten Web site, americasbestonline.net, has selected the best America has to offer.

The site contains the top national parks, beaches, vacation spots, hiking trails and more.

Celebrate the Season at Silver Dollar City in Branson

The folks at Silver Dollar City (SDC), near Branson, Missouri, are dressed up, settled in, decked out, revved up and altogether ready for An Old Time Christmas 2008, the 21st SDC Christmas festival. A thousand decorated trees and more than four million lights bring the Ozark theme park to sparkling life day and night. What an invitation for families looking for a new Christmas treat.

USA Today, CNN Travel and Good Morning America have all cited SDC's Old Time Christmas as one of the nation's top holiday celebrations. Having been there for the last three Christmases, I'll have to agree with the secular media on this one!

What can you expect? Well, for starters, lots of lights. After dark a five-story Christmas tree in the square is the star of a special effects music and light show every 15 minutes. The tree's thousands of lights dance and shimmer to the beat of the music. And a Holiday Light Parade has eight lighted floats with 100,000 lights.

Also for the whole family, SDC's Dickens' Christmas Carol is a one-hour musical adaptation of the classic story presented on-stage at the Opry House. SDC players portray the Christmas ghosts, Tiny Tim and the transformation of Ebenezer Scrooge with humor and emotion. National reviews have likened its quality to Broadway.

Yes, there's a lot to see, but there's also a lot to do at SDC. For the young – and the young at heart – this season sees the debut of Frosty, an interactive musical that invites kids to help bring the legendary snowman to life. And believe it or not, for night-time thriller rides, the park's roller coasters will zip you up above the lights and around the park. I have to confess, I haven't tried that yet. Maybe next Christmas.

The park's Culinary & Craft School, open for the first time this fall, offers short classes in the kitchen arts – classic Christmas cookies, holiday pies and traditional soups and stews. Of course, throughout the park, down-home food is available at every turn – a prime rib buffet, turkey and all the trimmings, apple dumplings, hot wassail and more.

This unique park began as the vision of Hugo Herschend who, with his wife and teenage sons Jack and Pete, began developing Marvel Cave into a regional tourist attraction in the early 1950s. Ten years later, they had begun to purchase, move and reassemble authentic Ozark structures at the site – homes, shops, a church – and they were hosting up to 600 adult guests a day.

Suffice it to say that Marvel Cave (still open for tours) and Silver Dollar City thrived. This Christmas season, November and December, they'll host 350,000 guests or more.

"When we started the Christmas festival in 1988, we weren't sure if it would even work during a time that was traditionally the off-season," says Brad Schroeder, SDC entertainment director. Now, SDC offers a fun, friendly, safe environment where families can immerse themselves in the spirit of Christmas. A large nativity scene in one locale and a living nativity in another will help your family remember the reason we celebrate.

Jack and Pete Herschend still head Herschend Family Entertainment, with some 20 properties in nine states. Many call it a "Christian company," and, indeed its main players take their faith seriously both in and out of the office. The Herschends attribute their business success to principles they learned from their father, who passed away of a heart attack while the park was still in its infancy.

What principles did they learn from their dad? Integrity. Hard work. The ability to dream big. Honesty. Respect for others. Faith. The SDC corporate mission statement talks of respecting guests and employees, and creating great family memories. And it ends by saying they will accomplish this "all in a manner consistent with Christian values and ethics."

"We are in the entertainment business and we work very, very hard to provide worthwhile entertainment," says Pete Herschend. In other words, he doesn't see SDC as an evangelistic ministry. Yet the Christian faith is welcome there.

"We love this place," says Danny Eakin, "because we can witness for the Lord." Eakin is a long-time performer with the Homestead Pickers at McHaffie's Homestead, one of the Ozark cabins at the park.

"In Las Vegas, they use the theme 'What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,'" says Pete. "We hope what happens here goes everywhere."

Four million lights, one thousand Christmas trees, music, food, drama and roller coasters – all in a Christian environment. No wonder SDC is earning a reputation as the nation's best spot for a family Old Time Christmas.

Christmas in Branson is a Winter Wonderland of Fun

It’s the most wonderful time of the year in Branson, Missouri.

Twenty years ago, the entertainment district in this resort town in the Ozarks shut down for the season. Then, one by one, the attractions realized what a draw the Christmas holiday would be and now hundreds of thousands of visitors brave the chilly weather to flock to Branson in November and December.

Singer Andy Williams truly represents the classic American Christmas show for most folks over the age of 40.

His Christmas show in 2008 keeps that spirit alive. Mixing in some familiar favorites like "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" and "It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year", Williams sings and dances with the energy of someone 20 years his junior.

The show has great music and laughter. Willims does a bit with Bob Anderson, a world class singer and impressionist. Anderson is dead on in impersonations of a drunken Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Tom Jones, Nat King Cole and last but in no way least - Andy Williams.

Williams sings while Anderson mocks his mannerism behind his back on stage. The kicker is when Williams and Anderson - impersonating Williams - sing a duet.

Williams foregoes an intermission to get as much Christmas spirit into one show.

Williams does two shows - one at 3 p.m. and one at 7 p.m. - from Monday to Saturday every day from Nov. 1 to Dec. 13. The theater is closed on Nov. 26 - the day before Thanksgiving. There are no matinees on Nov. 24-27.

What a country!

Yakov Smirnoff loves America. And he loves Christmas.

His Christmas show in November and December packs them in even though the shows are in the afternoons and morning. The Russian jokester’s monologues and film clips chronicle a career of standup comedy and work on TV and film. In one clip he plays, he tells the late Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show that America has a lot of things you can’t find in the former Soviet Union.
Like warning shots.
Yakov has a nice blend of spontaneous comments and audience participation. In a mock presidential news conference, he takes questions from the audience while pretending to be the president. And as funny as the show is, Yakov tells a sentimental story of his first Christmas in America and how through the generosity of three perfect strangers, he found some new friends in the New World.

Yakov performs his Christmas shows at 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Nov. 18 and 20 and December 2-3 and 9-10. He does only the 9:30 a.m. show on November 15, 19, 22, 25-26 and 29 and Dec. 4, 6-7 and 11-12. On the following dates, he has only one 3 p.m. show - Nov. 16, 21, 23 and 30 and December 5.

An Irish Christmas

A dozen talented vocalists - some from Ireland and a few from America - put on an amazing vocal show during the Christmas season at Branson.

The Branson Variety Theatre hosts sold-out crowds for this group of singers and dancers.
Beside some familiar Christmas tunes, the 12 Irish Tenors sing old favorites, including "Danny Boy", "That’s Life", "You Raise Me Up", "Hey Jude", "Twist and Shout", "Yesterday", "Cockles and Mussels", “Nessun Dorma," "Music of the Night" and more.

Their rendition of Danny Boy alone is worth the price of admission.

The 12 Irish Tenors perform their Christmas show at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on November 16, 23 and 30 and Dec. 7. The show is at 10 a.m. only on Nov. 18 and 20 and Dec. 2, 4, 9 and 11. The shows are presented at 3 and 8 p.m. on Nov. 17 and Dec. 1, 5, 8, 12, 14 and 19-20. The show is at 3 p.m. only on Nov. 25 and 27 and Dec. 16-18. There is only one 8 p.m. show on Nov. 19, 26 and 28 and Dec. 3 and 10.

An Old Time Christmas

Much of the history of Branson revolves around Silver Dollar City and the rich Ozark Mountain heritage. That theme is in full swing this November and December with Silver Dollar City’s An Old Time Christmas.

The 1880s-style theme park has more than 4.5 million Christmas lights. The Square has more than a million lights alone. There are 350 miles of lights plus more than 1,000 decorated Christmas trees.

The 50-foot tall Christmas tree on the Square has 350,000 LED lights. The Christmas on Main Street show is incredibly synchronized - to one hundredth of a second. There are 100 light changes every second.

“With the addition of even more lights and effects, we’ve dramatically enhanced the atmosphere of the Square,” said Trudie Kelly, Silver Dollar City visual supervisor. “The LED lights also help to cut back on energy consumption throughout the park.”

For the adventurous, the park’s roller coasters are open at night for a spectacular view of the lights. Inside, the Broadway-style production of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol adds to the Christmas spirit. This is an original adaptation of the classic story.

Also, at Silver Dollar City, the employees can say, “Merry Christmas” instead of just “Happy Holidays.” Silver Dollar City is open Wednesdays through Sundays in November, Thursdays through Sundays through Dec. 14 and open daily December 18-23 and December 26-30. On most days, the hours are 1-9 p.m.

Festival of Lights

The Branson Area Festival of Lights started on Nov. 1 and stays until New Year’s Eve.
The drive through the display is on the Shepherd of the Hills Expressway Lane, across from the new Sight & Sound Theatre (home of Noah, the Musical).

The festival begins with a one-mile drive with more than 230 colorful light displays and almost one million lights. The festival is open daily from dusk to 11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday and from dusk to midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Branson Landing

We stayed at the Hilton Promenade on Branson Landing. That puts you right in the center of one of the most scenic parts of town and in the middle of a convenient shopping district.

It’s a great place to plan to watch the 60th Annual Adoration Parade and Lighting Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 7.

The two-mile parade route goes right through history downtown Branson.
Titanic Display

A small wicker suitcase that once belonged to Millvina Dean - the only living survivor of the Titanic disaster - will be on display at the Titanic Museum in Branson until Dec. 31.

“This will be the world’s first look at an important piece of Titanic history, one that’s not been seen by the public for 96 years,” said John Joslyn, owner of the museum. “We feel privileged to be given this unique opportunity to honor Millvina Dean and her contributions to Titanic’s legacy and to showcase one of her most valued possessions - a small, memory-filled suitcase.”

Dean was a baby girl when the unsinkable Titanic sank 96 years ago. Her mother and young brother survived while her father perished. Arriving in New York with nothing but the clothes on their backs, a stranger gave this small suitcase filled with donated clothing.

The museum has a treasure of artifacts, photos, history and memorabilia of the Titanic plus a full display of the Titanic movie.

More than a million visitors have come to Branson to see this museum.

Branson's Ozark Mountain Christmas Begins November 1st

The Live Music Show Capital of the World - Branson - kicks off Ozark Mountain Christmas on Nov. 1 with star-filled Christmas music shows and a Holiday Promenade of Stars parade at Branson Landing.

Branson's star entertainers and holiday production numbers are ready to dazzle visitors and their families in November and December. From "Mr. Christmas" Andy Williams to Tony Orlando and the Lennon Sisters at the Welk Resort, a multitude of shows deck the halls and showcase Branson's Christmas spirit.

"Christmastime in Branson reminds me of Christmas when I was a boy. There's an excitement about Christmas in Branson with the shows, Silver Dollar City and all the other attractions. The atmosphere in Branson around Christmas always seems that much more welcoming and warm," said Williams, whose trademark Christmas sweaters add to the holiday cheer.

Familiar carols fill the air at family shows like the Presleys, Baldknobbers, and Hughes Brothers and peals of laughter roll down the aisles at Jim Stafford, Hamner-Barber and Yakov Smirnoff's shows. From the Oak Ridge Boys' Christmas show, to Broadway's Spirit of Christmas with The Osmonds, Branson wraps up its musical packages with one-of-a-kind festive family fun. And, for the kid in everyone, there's a "magical" Christmas show as well, at world-famous Kirby VanBurch's Christmas Spectacular.

Silver Dollar City's An Old Time Christmas (Nov. 1 - Dec. 30), one of America's most acclaimed Christmas celebrations, is kicking off its brightest season to date with new shows and activities, plus more lights than ever presented throughout the streets of the 1880's-style theme park. Newly enhanced lighting, through the addition of thousands of energy saving lights and all-new wrapping of 40-foot-tall trees, the spectacular Christmas on Main Street, with its showcase five-story special effects Christmas tree and all-immersive light and sound show, is even more spectacular. Also new this year, Silver Dollar City presents Frosty, an interactive musical, and the Culinary & Craft School that will premier this holiday season. Returning favorites include the Holiday Light Parade with colorful musical floats and the acclaimed production A Dickens' Christmas Carol. And for nighttime thrills, the roller coasters are open after dark with great views of the park's four million lights.

On the first Sunday in December, thousands of people gather in downtown Branson to watch a Christmas parade dedicated to "the true meaning of the season." This year marks the 60th Adoration Parade, an evening event with dozens of high school bands and lighted floats. The theme has always been "Keeping Christ in Christmas."

The Showboat Branson Belle is bedecked in all its Christmas finery and charts a course for holiday food and fun on Table Rock Lake though December. Also, the World's Largest Titanic Museum Attraction will be decorated with thousands of merry lights and holiday trim that recall those elegant Christmases past.

Holiday shoppers will discover Branson's newest "Winter Wonder Landing" at the Branson Landing waterfront. The Landing features a promenade of trendy specialty shopping and dining establishments, the brilliant water and fire spectacular that dances to the sounds of the season in the Town Square and Santa Claus, who has even been known to vacation in Branson himself.

Three name-brand outlet malls, boutique shops at the Grand Village, Ozarks craftsmen at Branson Mills and Engler Block and shops throughout Branson are decked out in lights with holiday decorations that beckon Yuletide visitors.

Christmas traditions in the Branson/Lakes Area include a Christmas light display at the Enchanted Forest on Indian Point Rd., the Christmas on the Trail show and Trail of Lights at Shepherd of the Hills Historic Homestead and the animated lighting displays of the 1-mile Branson Area Festival of Lights drive-through.

For rest and relaxation following a fun holiday entertainment and shopping outing, a host of Branson lodging options and special offers are available from a cozy cabin at one of the lakeside resorts to luxurious hotel rooms and condos throughout the area.

Branson has more than 100 live shows, theme parks, pristine lakes, golf courses, family attractions, shopping and other features that are fun for everyone!

Silver Dollar City Presents An Old Time Christmas Starting November

Silver Dollar City’s An Old Time Christmas, one of the nation’s most acclaimed Christmas celebrations, presents the spectacular Christmas on Main Street featuring the Five-Story Special Effects Christmas Tree and a light and sound show on the Square, plus the acclaimed musical production “A Dickens’ Christmas Carol,” the colorful Holiday Light Parade, a dramatic production of the Living Nativity and over 4 million lights throughout the park. New this year, the park presents Frosty, an interactive musical show where kids help bring the legendary snowman to life, all part of the festival running November 1 – December 30.

With the colorful 5-Story Special Effects Tree as a centerpiece, the Christmas on Main Street show includes one million lights - lights on buildings, in hanging canopies over the city streets and on 250 Christmas trees around the Square. As the 5-Story Tree blazes in synchronization with the musical movements of Christmas songs, the lights around Main Street flash along with it, accompanied by surround-sound, immersing guests in the experience. The performance begins with the tree-lighting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. and runs throughout the evening.

Profiled as one of the top Christmas celebrations in the country by USA Today, Good Morning America and Southern Living, An Old Time Christmas transforms the Silver Dollar City into an evening wonderland with over four million lights and 1,000 decorated Christmas trees. The colorful Holiday Light Parade, with musical floats covered in bright lights, winds through the streets of the City each evening.

Silver Dollar City’s acclaimed production, A Dickens’ Christmas Carol, is an original musical adaptation of the famous classic by Charles Dickens. The show features elaborate sets and stunning visual effects, with flying spirits, vanishing ghosts, revolving scenery and pyrotechnic special effects. The production showcases a cast of 14 actors, accompanied by a live band.

The tastes of the season are in abundance throughout the park, from a Prime Rib Buffet at the Mill Restaurant to traditional favorites such as Turkey and Gravy with Cran-Apple Raisin Dressing. Festive holiday treats include old-fashioned Chocolate and Marshmallow S’Mores, Gingerbread Cookies, Apple Dumplings, Hot Wassail, Cappucino and creamy Hot Chocolate. Kids can sign up for a special lunch with Santa, available weekends throughout the festival.

Holiday shows include Cedric Benoit and the Cajun Connection performing in a Cajun-style holiday show, and the rollicking Christmas comedy “Frontier Fa-la-la Follies” in the Silver Dollar Saloon. Tracy Heaston and Pure Heart perform in “A Christmas Homecoming.”

Especially for kids, Santa is available to hear requests, and kids can make ornaments, create Christmas cards and decorate Christmas cookies. Guests are invited to join in the singing of Christmas carols at the historic Wilderness Church and ride the Silver Dollar Sing-Along Steam Train.

During An Old Time Christmas, Silver Dollar City is open Wednesdays through Sundays through November 30, Thursdays through Sundays December 4 – 14, then open daily December 18-23 and December 26-30. Hours are 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and on all Saturdays 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. The park is also open on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on November 28.

The money-saving packages include Silver Dollar City, White Water, Celebration City, Showboat Branson Belle, Ride the Ducks and Dixie Stampede. The combination of Silver Dollar City's theme parks and shows along with lodging allow customers to book Branson vacation packages at a discount of up to twenty percent over purchasing the products individually.

While the all-inclusive design of the Silver Dollar City vacation packages allows customers to reserve park tickets, show tickets, and lodging while saving money, the ReserveDirect's reservation system permits them to get more for their money by choosing “add-ons” at discounted rates. These include the Dixie Stampede Dinner Show and a cruise on the Showboat Branson Belle.

Greg Craig, Internet Marketing Manager for Herschend Family Entertainment, owners and operators of Silver Dollar City attractions, said online conversion continues to improve as a result of providing user friendly packaging services to our customers. “Considering the record rainfall and current state of the economy, I’m very pleased with our results.”

John Johnson, President of ReserveDirect, added, "And with the stress of these shaky economic times and high gas prices, it's good to know people can still afford to take a vacation while saving some money. It's expensive to hop on a plane and go to Florida. But with our tool, you can spend a lot less to get here and have just as much fun."

ReserveDirect has been providing online reservation technology since 2001 with the launch of their first destination website for Branson Missouri vacations, ReserveBranson.com. In 2004, ReserveDirect also launched ReservePigeonForge.com and ReserveGatlinburg.com to service the Smoky Mountain family vacation destinations.

A St. Louis based company, ReserveDirect has provided similar solutions for lodging associations and destination marketing organizations in markets like Branson, Missouri; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tennessee; and Orlando, Florida. ReserveDirect also operates its own consumer booking engines in each of these destinations, as well as services for Polk County, Florida, Table Rock Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, and Springfield, Missouri Convention and Visitors Bureau.

History is Alive and Thrills Thrive at Branson's Silver Dollar City

Comparing an 1880s-style theme park to a tree seems like a stretch, but knowing Silver Dollar City's true story, it makes perfect sense.

Silver Dollar City arose from a spectacular, natural cavern, Marvel Cave, deep underground in the southwest Missouri Ozark Mountains - just a gas tank away from Southwestern Illinois - building the park around trees instead of over them.

"It's a great root ball that has determined the roots of this community," said Silver Dollar City co-founder Pete Herschend, who founded the park with his brother, Jack, and whose father, Hugo, inspired the theme park. "It makes a vast difference in our corner of the world today, who we are today and who we will be tomorrow."

Hugo and Mary Rinker Herschend leased Marvel Cave in Shepherd of the Hills country for public tours in the 1950s. No theme park existed then.

After Danish immigrant, Hugo Herschend, a transplant with his family from the Chicago suburbs to Branson, died Nov. 14, 1955, Mary took over managing Marvel Cave and its tours. Mary, born on a farm near Table Grove, Ill., and educated at Eureka College in Illinois, announced in 1959 the construction of an Ozark Mountain village to be located at the north end of Marvel Cave's parking lot.

The Ozark village would be a living, working village, for the purpose of entertaining tourists waiting for cave tours, she said. Silver Dollar City opened May 1, 1960, its name coined by the park's press agent at the time. It was so named because silver dollar coins would be given to visitors as change when most people paid with paper money instead of plastic cards.

Americans of the late 1950s were enamored with Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy and the Western frontier. They loved the Wild West. Thus, Silver Dollar City began with such a theme: five frontier-style buildings, two reconstructed log buildings, the Wilderness Church and the McHaffie Homestead, making up an old-time village. Also on site were a blacksmith shop, general store, ice cream parlor, doll shop and the Stage Coach Inn, all still there.

Silver Dollar City's charm lies in its organic, family-owned essence that has changed a bit over time, but also mostly remained intact at its roots.

Silver Dollar City "citizens," or employees, dressed in late 1800s attire, and still do, while "the Hatfields and McCoys" reinstated their legendary feud on Main Street. Ultimately, Ozark Mountain folk culture has replaced that of the Old West.

Silver Dollar City wanted for no entertainers, because it had generations of Branson-born performers who had entertained visitors long before the bright neon lights and music halls on 76 Country Boulevard, Branson's main strip. The famous Presleys' Country Jubilee, one of the original shows, started in a cave to cool off tourists during hot weather.

Silver Dollar City also came with its own Ozark folklore, thanks to author Harold Bell Wright's "The Shepherd of the Hills," reportedly based upon real individuals living in the Branson area at the turn of the century.

Ozark crafts also became an integral part of Silver Dollar City's success. Mary Herschend, who died in 1983, was interested in the Ozark people's crafts and thought others also would be. The City's most important seasonal event, National Festival of Craftsmen, began in 1963 as the Missouri Festival of Ozark Craftsmen.

"People say, ‘I came there when I was a little kid. I want my kids to feel that,'" Pete Herschend said. "It's a joy for us as a community to watch growth, to be a part of it and watch the change."

This year, Silver Dollar City celebrates its biggest festival year to date, with new original stage productions, performing groups and festival showcases. The spring season started the year off with an Irish Celebration at its World-Fest and Bluegrass and BBQ festival.

This summer, Silver Dollar City brings families its Biggest Kids Fest Ever, presenting a nationally recognized slate of entertainment with The Magic of Peter Gossamer, a Kid Concoctions Activity Center, an interactive world of play, a "VeggieTales" live stage show produced exclusively for Silver Dollar City and an Ice Circus with skating performers from around the world.

Fall's Southern Gospel Picnic features the top traditional and contemporary entertainers in the genre. The National Harvest Festival brings the largest gathering in America's Heartland of demonstrating craftsmen, harvest-time foods and musical performances plus special events: A Salute to the American Cowboy and an all-new Tribute to the American Farmer.

Silver Dollar City will conclude the year with its An Old Time Christmas light show.

"Historically, in tough economic times, people from within a 300 mile radius will still travel to Branson, but they're looking for real value when they get here - without forfeiting quality," said Jerry Henry, research director for Silver Dollar City. He noted the park has added new "kid's meal deals" and merchandise/food discounts to its ticket packages.

Drive-to Destination Branson Offers Vacation Values

Whether vacation means a few days to get away, or a week off, the Silver Dollar City Attractions (SDC) rank as Branson, Missouri's most popular choices for families, a travel segment that shows marked increase to the drive-to destination, centrally located in the middle of the country. The SDC Attractions include the internationally-awarded 1880s theme park Silver Dollar City, the 20th Century themed amusement park Celebration City, White Water water park and the Showboat Branson Belle.

"Of the approximately 8 million visitors to Branson, families now represent 41% compared to 26% in 2005," said Jerry Henry, Research Director for SDC. "More families are discovering Branson's scope of entertainment, now more than ever with a keen eye toward packaging their experience."

With high gas prices, industry experts say travelers are actively seeking value, with more than half the nation's travelers now planning their vacations online. To answer the trend, Silver Dollar City Attractions are combining activities, bonus coupons, and lodging over the Internet.

"We're finding our guests want bundling tailored to the family's needs. Historically, in tough economic times such as gas price hikes, people will still drive to Branson, but they're looking for real value when they get here, without forfeiting quality," Henry said, noting SDC has added new kids' meal deals and merchandise/food discounts to online ticket packages.

To further attract families, Silver Dollar City presents its Biggest Kids Fest Ever with all-new nationally branded entertainment during the National Kids Fest, June 7th - August 10. The festival includes: The Magic of Peter Gossamer; the internationally-traveled performers of Ice Circus; the world debut of a VeggieTales stage show, "The Invention of Silliness" starring
America's favorite talking vegetables; and the PBS acclaimed "Kid Concoctions;" plus roller coasters, underground cave exploration, two dozen themed rides, crafts and shows.

Celebration City presents its biggest ride expansion ever: the water adventure ride Roaring Falls, taking riders on an Amazon-themed journey ending with a 5-story splash finale. White Water features 12 attractions, including Kalani Towers, a 7-story, 6-slide, multi-experience thrill ride. Dive in to Summer Fun in Branson, Missouri

Branson, Missouri is diving into the summer season, and this year, it’s making the biggest splash ever! When the summer sun heats up, it’s time for summer fun. Luckily, Branson is located in the midst of the Tri-Lakes area which boasts three supreme lakes, including Table Rock Lake, Bull Shoals Lake, and Lake Taneycomo. Providing the perfect way to cool down, these beautiful Branson lakes also allow visitors to heat their summer fun by taking part in swimming, water sports, fishing and many other lake activities.

Table Rock Lake is by far the most popular lake, as it is very close to Branson attractions but still far enough away to make you feel like you’re really experiencing the Ozarks. Table Rock Lake also has several marinas, including the Table Rock State Park Marina, where visitors can rent ski boats, pontoons and other water sports craft. The Table Rock Dam is also a sight to see, as is the Fish Hatchery and Dewey Short Visitor Center. With over 750 miles of shoreline and around 45,000 acres of lake surface, there is plenty of room for everyone to stay and play at Table Rock Lake.

Bull Shoals Lake is another lake touting summertime fun and relaxation. Located to the east of Branson, this lake is a haven for both fisherman and water enthusiasts. It has numerous spots to swim where the water is deep enough for rock jumping, and the crystal clear water is perfect for divers and snorkelers. With a variety of access points and numerous places to reel in the catch of the day, Bull Shoals Lake is a beautiful oasis in the Ozarks.

The third lake, Lake Taneycomo, is a world class trout fishing lake, making it a must for any fisherman. Stocked annually with approximately 750,000 10-12" rainbow trout, Lake Taneycomo is a cold water lake attracting the best fishing in the Ozarks. Along with its great fishing opportunities, Lake Taneycomo is also a sight to see. It is accessible from multiple points throughout the area, including the famous Branson Landing. Another highlight of Lake Taneycomo is the available fishing guide services, boat rentals, and water sports fun such as canoes and kayaks.

The Tri-Lakes area and Branson go hand in hand. The beauty of Branson is elevated by the scenic, natural elements of the lake and the lakes are complemented by the environmentally friendly way Branson has developed. In addition to the lakes, summer fun in Branson also includes popular Branson shows and Branson attractions. Silver Dollar City and White Water are two hot weather favorites, and there are several hotels near Silver Dollar City. Plenty of lodging is available in Branson, however, complete with pet friendly Branson properties and discounted Branson hotels.

Branson a Hot Spot for Reunions

Midwest Living Magazine has placed Branson at the top of its list for Best Family Reunion Spot. Branson ranked five stars in the magazine’s categories of appeal, lodging choices, and planning help and three stars for location. Appeal was based on a family’s desire to go to a location. Location looked at convenience and proximity to major cities or airports. Lodgings checked the range of different types of lodging, while planning help took on the dedication of tourism office staff to help families plan their event.

The article said Branson has “lodgings for everyone,” that “music shows, Silver Dollar City theme park and Table Rock Lake bring travelers” to the area. The Branson Chamber of Commerce helps hundreds of families a year plan their reunions by collecting the group’s information and then sending the information to establishments that cater to reunions.

“We were so excited to see the March-April issue of ‘Midwest Living’ magazine highlighting family reunions,” said Lynn Berry, director of public relations for Branson Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce. “And we were so proud that Branson was selected as their top pick.”

Some of the top Branson lodgings chosen for the spread include Thousand Hills, Westgate Branson Woods Resort, Still Waters Condominium Resort and The Village at Indian Point.

Branson Celebrates the Holidays

Christmas in the Ozarks has become big business for Branson. The southwest Missouri town of 7,435 welcomes the holiday season with dancing Santas, reindeer, penguins and millions of twinkling lights.

Twenty years ago, Branson nearly shut down after Halloween until the spring season. But now, November and December are Branson's second busiest period — exceeded only in numbers of visitors by the summer onslaught of families with kids interested in miniature golf, bumper cars and boats, go-karts and swimming in the area's three lakes.

Branson's older visitors are often the town's best customers during the holidays. On a recent Friday night, 24 buses (or coaches, as insiders refer to them) sat outside fiddler Shoji Tabuchi's show.

Another favorite — singer Andy Williams — sings about Christmas being "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year." He'll celebrate his 80th birthday on Dec. 3 with 4,000 of his closest friends in two shows he'll be doing that day at his Moon River Theatre.

And a few other acts include:

— Singer-comedian Jim Stafford gives audience members a reason to ho-ho-ho as he dons a Santa suit each night at his show.

— Fiddler Shoji Tabuchi, who performs holiday tunes, is often surrounded by 7-foot tall reindeer standing on their hind legs. The reindeer return later wearing hula skirts and coconut bras to do another dance with Tabuchi, who wears an aqua blue jacket emblazoned with sequined pineapples.

— Russian comedian Yakov Smirnoff is backed up by Frosty the Snowman, Santa and a Russian dance troupe.

— Country's Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers, Lawrence Welk's Lennon Sisters, "Mr. Banjo" Buck Trent and Mel Tillis spend much of the holidays entertaining busloads of tourists and those who "drive on their own" to Branson. Many of the big-name shows will shut down by Dec. 15 until the spring season begins in early April.

SILVER DOLLAR CHRISTMAS

By far the biggest Christmas spectacular is "An Old Time Christmas" at Silver Dollar City, which switched this year to more energy-efficient lights, cutting its energy usage to 20 percent of what it was a year ago, explained Brad Thomas, park general manager.

This year, the park's Main Street features a five-story special effects Christmas tree covered with 300,000 lights that glow and flash in unison to music that begins at 5:30 p.m. and continues every 15 minutes after that. More than 450,000 lights adorn the surrounding 10 storefronts and 250 cut pine trees. A Gifts of Christmas Light Parade with 80,000 lights winds through the park twice each night. In addition, Silver Dollar City's excellent production of "A Dickens' Christmas Carol" with 14 actors is performed six times daily, along with a "live" nativity scene.

On a recent Saturday night, a wedding party delayed the ceremony to watch the tree-lighting before exchanging vows in the park's picturesque Wilderness Chapel.

Toby Thompson of Topeka, Kan., brings his wife, son and in-laws to Branson each year for Thanksgiving and a family reunion. However this year, the reunion has moved to Fort Worth, Texas. But they took a quick three-day trip to Branson over Veteran's Day weekend, anyway. "We enjoy coming here for the Christmas activities and staying in a log cabin," he said. "The area is just so beautiful that we love coming here. And the women love to go shopping here."

The Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce survey confirms that 88 percent of its nearly 8 million visitors last year report going shopping in Branson compared with 84 percent attending shows, 36 percent going to theme parks and 33 percent to museums. Other tourists went to the lake (29 percent), participated in outdoor activities (8 percent) and played golf (5 percent).

NEW SHOPS

Branson's newest shopping complex, the $420 million Branson Landing, which opened in May last year, has been renamed Branson Winter WonderLanding for the season, with Santa setting up in a 50-foot illuminated Christmas Treehouse with its own fireplace. The outdoor mall along Lake Taneycomo is adorned with 20 million sparkling lights. The $7.5 million Branson Landing fountains are choreographed to holiday songs as they shoot water 120 feet into the air and five cannon blast fireballs above the lake.

America's Brightest Christmas Happens at Branson's Silver Dollar City

One of the nation's brightest, most elaborate Christmas celebrations has it all -- from a 5-story tree with a million-dollar light-and-sound special effects show to a Dickens production, a light parade and four million lights. It takes place throughout the holiday season at Branson's Silver Dollar City theme park. The park, set in the Ozark Mountains of Branson, Missouri, excels in delivering an unparalleled Christmas experience.

"Where else can you get this kind of family entertainment package --from a 5-Story Special Effects Christmas Tree to roller coasters at night?" said Silver Dollar City General Manager Brad Thomas. "Not only does Silver Dollar City do Christmas in a spectacular way, but the whole entertainment destination of Branson lights up, from the live shows to the holiday light drive-throughs."

Visitors entering Silver Dollar City can't miss the towering 5-Story Special Effects Christmas Tree, which becomes even more impressive when its 350,000 lights blaze and flash in high-tech, split-second synchronization to Christmas songs. The tree is joined in its nightly shows by 250 lighted Christmas trees, hanging light canopies and lighted shop fronts – a million lights in all just for the Christmas on Main Street shows.

And it's clearly Christmas throughout the park -- a Holiday Light Parade with musical, brightly lighted floats glides through the streets each evening, strolling carolers sing, Santa visits with kids and Christmas shows play in several entertainment venues. Take in the Broadway-style production "A Dickens' Christmas Carol" or The Living Nativity, and dine on hearty foods from prime rib to a traditional turkey and dressing dinner.

The adventurous can take a night ride on any of the park's thrill rides from roller coasters to this year's new Giant Swing, while demonstrating craftsmen make blown glass ornaments, copper fountains and handmade pottery serving platters perfect for Christmas gifts.

Profiled as one of the top Christmas celebrations in the country by USA Today and People Magazine, and spotlighted in the Wall Street Journal, Silver Dollar City continues to shine as a holiday destination. And Branson's 52 theaters feature holiday sets, songs and costumes in their live shows, rounding out the area's entertainment options.

Silver Dollar City is open through December 30.

From the famous voice of "Mr. Christmas" Andy Williams to the multimedia extravaganza of The Christmas Sounds of Mannheim Steamroller at The Grand Palace, as well as Mel Tillis and Connie Smith at the Welk Resort, there's a multitude of Branson Christmas shows that deck the halls with boughs of holly and showcase the holiday's finest talent. Music fills the air at Branson's family shows like the Presleys, The Baldknobbers, and the Hughes Brothers and peals of laughter roll through the aisles at Jim Stafford, Hamner-Barber and Yakov Smirnoff's shows. From the Lennon Sisters with the Gatlin Brothers to Barbara Fairchild, the Twelve Irish Tenors and Broadway's Spirit of Christmas with The Osmonds, Branson wraps up its musical packages with one-of-a-kind holiday family fun. And, for the kids in all of us, there's a "magical" Christmas celebration as well, at world-famous Kirby VanBurch's Christmas Spectacular.

Silver Dollar City, an internationally awarded theme park, presents an all-new, $1 million light and sound extravaganza for "An Old Time Christmas" the park's biggest light show ever. Called "Christmas on Main Street," the show features a new 5-Story Special Effects Christmas Tree that blazes to the musical movements of Christmas songs, joined by one million lights on trees, shop fronts and hanging canopies all flashing, as surround-sound fills the Square. The entire park glows with millions of flickering lights and a Holiday Light Parade with colorful, musical floats winds through the streets. The acclaimed Dickens' "Christmas Carol" returns with the special effects said to be one of the best productions in the history of the park. Plus, holiday food, strolling Christmas carolers and the roller coasters are open after dark for the thrill of the lights from above.

The Showboat Branson Belle is bedecked in Christmas finery and charts a course for holiday food and fun on Table Rock Lake though December. Also, the World's Largest Titanic Museum Attraction will be decorated with thousands of merry lights and holiday trim that recall those elegant Christmases past. Your family can discover Branson's newest "Winter Wonder Landing" at the Branson Landing waterfront, featuring a promenade of trendy specialty shopping and dining establishments, the brilliant water and fire spectacular that dances to the sounds of the season in the Town Square and Santa Claus, who has even been known to vacation in Branson himself!

For all of your Christmas shopping, there are three name-brand outlet malls, boutique shops at the Grand Village and Ozarks craftsmen at Branson Mills and Engler Block with their stores all decked out in lights with elaborate holiday decorations that beckon Yuletide visitors.

A host of Branson lodging options are available from a cozy cabin at one of the lakeside resorts to luxurious hotel rooms and condos throughout the area.

While in the Branson/Lakes Area you can also enjoy a Christmas light display at the Enchanted Forest on Indian Point Rd. and the Christmas on the Trail show and Trail of Lights at Shepherd of the Hills Historic Homestead. On the first Sunday in December, thousands of people gather in downtown Branson to watch a Christmas parade dedicated to "the true meaning of the season." This year marks the 59th Adoration Parade in Branson, an evening event with dozens of high school bands and lighted floats. The theme has always been "Keeping Christ in Christmas."

"When I started my solo career, I believe God told me to come to Branson and sing with my kids. I'm a Southern California guy, but Christmas in the Ozarks is truly magical," says Righteous Brother Bill Medley, member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, who performs at Dick Clark's American Bandstand Theater.

Branson's Veterans Homecoming, Nov. 5-11, pays tribute to our nation's heroes from all wars and conflicts and all branches of service. For details about this weeklong series of events, tribute shows, reunions and more, click the above link.

Outdoor activities in the Ozarks like fishing, hiking, camping and other outdoor pursuits are year-round opportunities for sporting enthusiasts in the Ozarks. The cool, crisp weather in late autumn and early winter is an appealing time for outdoor activities. Those three pristine lakes never freeze, so they are ideal for fishing for bass, trout, crappie and other species, and there is boating and many other types of water activities even in mid-winter. The mild winters also allow visitors to enjoy the area's dozen championship Golf courses.

Branson Festival of Lights display Holiday Cheer

The Shine of Christmas lights will be coming from a different part of Branson this holiday season. Beginning on November 1 and all aglow through December 31, this year’s drive-through will be located at Shepherd of the Hills Expressway and Expressway Lane, close to the new Sight & Sound Theatre.

Experience the magic of an Ozark Mountain Christmas with the Branson Area Festival of Lights 2007 as all of Branson sparkles for the holidays. From fabulous Christmas shows and dazzling lights to spectacular shopping and breathtaking scenic beauty, Branson is a special gift for everyone in your family at this festive time of year.

The centerpiece, Branson Area Festival of Lights Drive-Through, will delight children of all ages. Your journey begins with a magical 1-mile drive along a path aglow with over 120 displays. Conveniently located off of Shepherd of the Hills Expressway at Expressway Lane, this one-of-a-kind family experience promises to be memorable.

Also in the Branson/Lakes Area you can enjoy extraordinary Christmas lighting displays at Silver Dollar City’s Old Time Christmas celebration, the Enchanted Forest on Indian Point Rd. and the Trail of Lights at Shepherd of the Hills.

“It’s the perfect facility for the festival to grow, so we can add some new elements over the next couple years,” said Chamber Director of Tourism Development Krystal Simon.

2007 will mark BAFOL’s second year back in Branson after a one-year hiatus in 2005 due to the construction of Target, Home Depot and TJ Maxx in the Branson Hills area. Last year, the festival returned to Branson Hills Parkway but added traffic and the current Wal-Mart Supercenter construction project forced the chamber to look for a new venue for the holiday tradition.

“Expressway Lane has all the criteria that we need,” Simon said. “The drive-through was 1.25 miles long last year, so we’ll have plenty of room to make it about that length again. There is plenty of access to electricity, and there will be minimal interference with residential traffic.” Simon all stated that all of the 120 light displays used last year will again be utilized this season. “We’re going to be working with an individual to come up with a new design and configuration for the displays.”

The BAFOL Drive-Through will be open daily November 1st through December 31st from 5-11p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5p.m.-midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Admission fees for 2007 will be $50 for full-sized motorcoaches, $25 for mini-coaches, church vans and limos, and family vehicles will be $10.
