During June, there are several special events happening, including events that celebrate dear old dad. At the Titanic Museum, they are hosting a Titanic Father’s Day Boat Show on June 20 & 21. Other attraction Dad might like include the ’57 Heaven Museum, which showcases automobiles from 1957, complete with lifestyle exhibits to really bring the culture of ’57 home. Neal McCoy is also performing in Branson during the month of June and will showcase his Top 20 songs, such as “No Doubt About It,” “Wink,” “ The Shake,” and “Billy’s Got His Beer Goggles On.” If Dad is a big Beatles fan, then he’ll love The Liverpool Legends. Their two hour show pays tribute to The Beatles and is produced by Louise Harrison, the sister of George Harrison. If a taste of the islands is needed, head over to Island Fire at the Dutton Theater, where Samoans perform traditional dances and create fiery entertainment, all served with a delicious Polynesian inspired meal.

Golf in Branson is another way Dad’s are sure to have fun, as Branson is home to several world class golf courses. Whether he tees off at the extraordinary Branson Creek Golf Course or Murder Rock Golf Course, or sets his sights on the holes at Pointe Royale or Thousand Hills, there are plenty of ways for Dad to score a hole-in-one in Branson.

Hot Winter Fun Big Show set for February 9

Wintertime is about to heat up in Branson.

Hot Winter Fun is in full swing and will run through February, according to Branson Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce officials.

According to the chamber, mild winter weather in the Ozarks, combined with seasonal special offers for value-minded visitors, creates an ideal opportunity to get away and enjoy Branson’s shows, attractions, shopping, museums, championship golf, world-class fishing, cozy lakeside resorts and much more.

“If you’ve got a case of the winter blues and a little cabin fever, get up and get away to Branson,” said Buck Trent, renowned banjo picker and country humorist. “We’re open for fun. In Branson, we’ve got the answer to your winter doldrums.”

Branson is celebrating 50 Years of Live Music Shows in 2009.

The featured event of Hot Winter Fun involves a collection of Branson entertainers.

The Hot Winter Fun Big Show is scheduled for Feb. 9 at the Jim Stafford Theatre in Branson.

It will include the musical variety visitors have come to expect in Branson and can be found during Hot Winter Fun. The variety includes Big Band, Broadway, country, swing, rock ‘n’ roll, pop, bluegrass, jazz, gospel, patriotic, classical and more.

There is music made famous by contemporary composers, cowboy poets, cinematic blockbusters, ‘50s heartthrobs, ‘60s pop bands, and today’s Top 40 artists can be heard from early morning until late at night in Branson.

Chamber officials say that with average daytime temperatures that rise well into the 50s, the winter months are a great time to visit Branson.

In fact, trout fishing on Lake Taneycomo is ideal this time of year. There’s no shortage of things to do and see.

The Jim Stafford Show in Branson Combines Laughter with Love for the Christmas Season

At the start of Jim Stafford’s Christmas show, he told the audience he had a special announcement.

“I just signed a new contract with Capitol Records,” said Stafford, who once had a TV show on in the 1970s. “If I buy two CDs every month, they’ll give me an extra one free.”

Anyone who has seen Stafford’s popular show in the heart of Branson knows to expect the unexpected.

But one thing you can count one from Stafford - two hours of family entertainment with great music, laugh-out-loud comedy and a deep-rooted good nature.

That innate goodness surfaced in his Christmas Show in early November. Stafford asked for applause for the wives of service men who stayed home while their men served their country.
Many Branson shows acknowledge those in the military, but Stafford said one night he was inspired to add a salute to those wives who stayed home, got jobs, raised kids and held the family together while men risked their lives in war.

In an interview with the Tulsa Beacon, the 64-year-old entertainer talked about his show in Branson, his famous friends and what the future might hold.

Back in the 1980s, Stafford had played in Branson for several years, including performances with Roy Clarke.

He was stricken by the number of theaters in this small town in the Ozarks.

Stafford fell in love with Branson and in what seemed at the time to be a risky move, built his theater here.

“I still can’t believe this is happening,” Stafford said in his office at his theater. “I can’t believe I’m here in this toy box. Sometimes, I just walk around backstage and stare. It’s the most wonderful thing. It’s always thrilling to me.”

One of main attractions for performers who settle in Branson has been having audiences come to them rather than being on tour all the time. They get to sleep in their own beds.

“It’s not just getting off the road but it’s getting to play at the same place each night,” Stafford said. “There is quite a list of details that have to be taken care of to put on the show. With the same people and location, all that concern goes away. You more time to work on the show. I get to try a lot of new things.”

Stafford, who was the lead writer for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour for two years in the 1960s, writes about 70 percent of his show. He is meticulous about the material - both the music and the comedy. It pays off in laughs and applause.

He said he has several projects that he hoped to incorporate into the show in 2008 but they aren’t quite finished. Some new elements can take up to six months to perfect.

Instead of changing his whole act periodically, he just plugs in new pieces. He is working on a tongue twister number and a takeoff of the movie Chariots of Fire.

Another piece on Route 66 will feature “Route 76” in reference to the infamous traffic jams in Branson along the main drag.

Some of Stafford’s more familiar hits include "Cow Patti" (complete with complimentary foam cow patties tossed into the audience) and "Spiders and Snakes."

Stafford hosted 56 episodes of Nashville on the Road. He was on the Tonight Show 26 times and also performed on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. He co-hosted Those Amazing Animals with Burgess Meredith and Priscilla Presley. Stafford is self-taught on guitar, fiddle, piano, banjo, organ and harmonica.

Stafford finds inspiration everywhere - even the Internet. He is fascinated by the wealth of videos on comedy, music and magic on http://www.youtube.com/.

“You can see videos of some great guitar players,” Stafford said. “It’s better (for research) than the Library of Congress.”

Not only is the content of Stafford’s show - and almost every show in Branson - suitable for families, Stafford said he draws a lot of children in his audiences.

Almost since their birth, he has incorporated his son Shea (who plays the piano and a mean fiddle) and daughter G.G. (who dances and plays the piano) into his show.

“A lot of my writing is for children,” Stafford said.

Dreams are made in Branson.

“All over town, there are people who come here with a dream,” Stafford said. “In Branson, they might find a place to fulfill that dream. They get to pursue show business.”

Down the street from his theater, Stafford said there is a wonderful Elvis impersonator working the crowd at McDonalds.

Stafford was with a friend in another restaurant when he heard a wonderful singer, saw a talented magician and heard a comedian during lunch.

“Where else in the world can you go to lunch and see four or five acts like that in a Cracker Barrel restaurant,” he asked.

Stafford’s show, like many in Branson, respects Christian faith and the traditional values of America.

During the Christmas show, Stafford’s wife, Ann recites One Solitary Life, a beautiful essay on the impact of Jesus. Every Sunday morning, The Jim Stafford Theatre converts from a theater to a local church.

One thing you can’t find in Branson is gambling. Consistent with its clean-cut, family image, entertainers and businessmen in Branson led the fight against bringing in casinos a few years ago.

Had the gambling advocates won that battle, Branson would have changed forever, he said.
“People would still come here for the shows, but it would have been a different set of people,” Stafford said.

Entertainer Wayne Newton brought his Las Vegas-style act to Branson for a while but then left. Stafford said Newton, a good friend, left because he was offered more money in Vegas.

“What people don’t know about Wayne Newton is that he pays his own way to entertain the troops overseas,” Stafford said. “Wayne has probably been to Iraq more than any other entertainer.”

At 64, Stafford shows no signs of slowing down. An avid tennis players, he works hard to keep in shape so he can sing and dance at the levels audiences have come to expect.

His friends Tommie and Dick Smothers are in their middle 70s and still performing. In Branson, Stafford’s buddy Andy Williams is still doing shows in his 80s. “Andy is amazing,” Stafford said.
His father was 86 and going strong when he passed away.

"(Humorist/pianist) Victor Borge was still performing in his 90s,” Stafford said. “I am going to do it as long as I can do it. Hopefully, my kids will take on more and more of the show. I think Shea will be a unique magician and I think G.G. will develop into a comedienne. I feel good about the future.”

Stafford performs almost year long but November and December are special. His Christmas show is at 8 p.m. every day in November (except Nov. 14 and 21) and he does a 3 p.m. matinee on Nov. 18, 20 and 28.

The two-hour Christmas show runs until Dec. 13, with one 8 p.m. show each night except on Dec. 4 and 11.

His regular show resumes on Dec. 27 and then he ends the years with a special 3-hour show (9 p.m. to midnight) on New Year’s Eve.

Restrooms are available during the show’s intermission.

Stafford tells a story about the rural roots of his late father, who wandered out into the parking lot during the intermission of another Branson show, thinking that the facilities were outside.
He couldn’t find an outhouse but then he looked up and saw the logo for Andy Williams’ huge “Moon River Theater.”

It seats over 2,000 and that’s all Jim Stafford’s daddy needed to hear.

Branson's Ozark Mountain Christmas Begins November 1st

The Live Music Show Capital of the World - Branson - kicks off Ozark Mountain Christmas on Nov. 1 with star-filled Christmas music shows and a Holiday Promenade of Stars parade at Branson Landing.

Branson's star entertainers and holiday production numbers are ready to dazzle visitors and their families in November and December. From "Mr. Christmas" Andy Williams to Tony Orlando and the Lennon Sisters at the Welk Resort, a multitude of shows deck the halls and showcase Branson's Christmas spirit.

"Christmastime in Branson reminds me of Christmas when I was a boy. There's an excitement about Christmas in Branson with the shows, Silver Dollar City and all the other attractions. The atmosphere in Branson around Christmas always seems that much more welcoming and warm," said Williams, whose trademark Christmas sweaters add to the holiday cheer.

Familiar carols fill the air at family shows like the Presleys, Baldknobbers, and Hughes Brothers and peals of laughter roll down the aisles at Jim Stafford, Hamner-Barber and Yakov Smirnoff's shows. From the Oak Ridge Boys' Christmas show, to Broadway's Spirit of Christmas with The Osmonds, Branson wraps up its musical packages with one-of-a-kind festive family fun. And, for the kid in everyone, there's a "magical" Christmas show as well, at world-famous Kirby VanBurch's Christmas Spectacular.

Silver Dollar City's An Old Time Christmas (Nov. 1 - Dec. 30), one of America's most acclaimed Christmas celebrations, is kicking off its brightest season to date with new shows and activities, plus more lights than ever presented throughout the streets of the 1880's-style theme park. Newly enhanced lighting, through the addition of thousands of energy saving lights and all-new wrapping of 40-foot-tall trees, the spectacular Christmas on Main Street, with its showcase five-story special effects Christmas tree and all-immersive light and sound show, is even more spectacular. Also new this year, Silver Dollar City presents Frosty, an interactive musical, and the Culinary & Craft School that will premier this holiday season. Returning favorites include the Holiday Light Parade with colorful musical floats and the acclaimed production A Dickens' Christmas Carol. And for nighttime thrills, the roller coasters are open after dark with great views of the park's four million lights.

On the first Sunday in December, thousands of people gather in downtown Branson to watch a Christmas parade dedicated to "the true meaning of the season." This year marks the 60th Adoration Parade, an evening event with dozens of high school bands and lighted floats. The theme has always been "Keeping Christ in Christmas."

The Showboat Branson Belle is bedecked in all its Christmas finery and charts a course for holiday food and fun on Table Rock Lake though December. Also, the World's Largest Titanic Museum Attraction will be decorated with thousands of merry lights and holiday trim that recall those elegant Christmases past.

Holiday shoppers will discover Branson's newest "Winter Wonder Landing" at the Branson Landing waterfront. The Landing features a promenade of trendy specialty shopping and dining establishments, the brilliant water and fire spectacular that dances to the sounds of the season in the Town Square and Santa Claus, who has even been known to vacation in Branson himself.

Three name-brand outlet malls, boutique shops at the Grand Village, Ozarks craftsmen at Branson Mills and Engler Block and shops throughout Branson are decked out in lights with holiday decorations that beckon Yuletide visitors.

Christmas traditions in the Branson/Lakes Area include a Christmas light display at the Enchanted Forest on Indian Point Rd., the Christmas on the Trail show and Trail of Lights at Shepherd of the Hills Historic Homestead and the animated lighting displays of the 1-mile Branson Area Festival of Lights drive-through.

For rest and relaxation following a fun holiday entertainment and shopping outing, a host of Branson lodging options and special offers are available from a cozy cabin at one of the lakeside resorts to luxurious hotel rooms and condos throughout the area.

Branson has more than 100 live shows, theme parks, pristine lakes, golf courses, family attractions, shopping and other features that are fun for everyone!

Branson Entertainers Plan Fundraiser for Flood Victims

Branson entertainers, vendors and community members will join forces on Saturday to give big to Midwest flood victims.

“Branson Gives Big” includes a family festival on the patio of Branson Star Theatre and a special concert. Proceeds from the festival, the concert, as well as from all the day’s shows at Branson Star Theatre, will benefit the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, as well as assist flood-victim families visiting Branson.

The one-time concert will include Jim Stafford, The Lennon Sisters, Jim Barber, The Hughes Brothers, Doug Gabriel, Dave and Denise Hamner, the cast of Breaking Up is Hard To Do, a musical featuring the songs of Neil Sedaka, Delena Ditto, David Lomascola, Gail Lennon and the Buzz Boys, Redkneckers and The Branson Divas.

Linda Buckles, one of the event coordinators, described bringing together so many Branson stars to benefit Midwest flood victims as “amazing.”

“This is just the kind of town that does that,” she said.

The show begins at 3 p.m.

The family festival, which gets under way at 11 a.m., will include concessions, vendors, inflatables, games and prizes, and free outdoor-stage entertainment.

“We are very excited about the outpouring from the Branson community and we are looking forward to a very fun event that is so much more special because all the vendors are donating a portion of their proceeds to the relief effort,” said co-event coordinator Angela Walker.

Buckles has been working to put faces on the victims and has arranged to bring five families affected by the flooding in Iowa to Branson for a free all-expense paid getaway. The families will be attending the day’s festivities.

“The community has given rooms, meals, show and attraction tickets — all free for these families. We are so grateful, however we do still need to pay for the travel expenses these families and are actively looking for donations to accomplish this,” Buckles said. “We are asking for help from the community to raise funds for the travel expenses and any amount will be appreciated.”

Buckles has visited with each of the families that will be arriving in town later this week. She said several have called this getaway a “miracle,” and something they could not have afforded to do, but truly appreciate at this time. Two of the five families have lost everything in the flooding.

“It is gut-wrenching,” Buckles said.

About 900 music lovers braved cold winter temperatures Tuesday night in search of Hot Winter Fun.

Almost 20 Branson acts joined forces for about a three-hour show at the Jim Stafford Theatre. The event has become an annual centerpiece of Hot Winter Fun, a key offseason marketing effort for the Branson-Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Branson meaning of offseason has changed during the Big Show’s 14-year run, according to host Jim Stafford. Stafford has hosted all but one of the 14 installments. Prior to the beginning of Hot Winter Fun almost a decade-and-a-half ago, most Branson shows went dark during winter months. During one of his early offseasons in Branson, Stafford drove past a local theater and noticed a parking lot full of cars. His vision: If local theaters are open, visitors will come.

Stafford’s been proven mostly right. While winter tourism numbers don’t approach peak season highs, more and more Branson attractions have adopted the year-round approach.

The Big Show takes a lot of volunteer effort to pull off. Jeannie Horton, general manager at Legends In Concert, has served as volunteer Big Show producer for several years. Horton started working on Tuesday’s show in November. She said it takes a great number of contacts to pull together a show involving so many Branson headliners.

Tuesday’s bill included show performers from Grand Jubilee, Comedy Jamboree, Legends In Concert, A Tribute to John Denver, Bob Nelson, Grand Old Gospel Hour, Up Close and Personal, 14 Karat Country, Rico J’s Hot Hits Experience, Clay Cooper, Jim Stafford, Penny Gilley, Circle B Chuckwagon Show, Island Fire, Branson Divas, New’s Country, Isle of Dreams, Red, Hot and Blue and The Magnificent Seven.

Tuesday’s show was moved from Monday because of bad weather. Frank and Mary Schwartz of Springfield reserved tickets and called Monday to cancel their reservations because of the ice storm. They cancelled their cancellation when they learned the Big Show had been moved a night later. They’re glad they did. Both praised the show and noted the event gives music lovers an opportunity to see unfamiliar acts. The Schwartzes have “been to a bunch” of previous Big Shows, Mary said. Tuesday night, she said, “We’re getting to see a lot of new acts we haven’t seen before.”

The Branson performers who donate their time to entertain Big Show spectators do so for more than one reason. The obvious one: artists are always on the lookout for new customers. But beyond the obvious, Tuesday’s artists by and large say they believe in helping each other and they believe in Branson tourism.

Hot Winter Fun in Branson, MO

The holidays are over, and some of us could be fighting a case of the winter blues in the upcoming months. Branson's promoters say they could have the cure - a little fun!

It's a common misconception that everything is closed in Branson this time of year but there is still some "Hot Winter Fun" during the cold winter months.

Christmas and New Years have come and gone again, and the excitement of the holiday season is behind us, but that doesn't mean all the excitement in Branson is gone.

"We are growing our winter season," said Ross Summers, president of the Branson Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Summers says Branson used to have shows only between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Not long ago, most shows shut down from January through March.

"This is the time they take their vacations. A lot of them revamp their shows every year, put new sets in, and get new songs together," he said.

But now, more shows than ever are open during the season known as "Hot Winter Fun." A few of the theatres that remain open during the winter months include the Grand Country Music Hall, the Dutton Theatre, and the Jim Stafford Theatre.

A lot of the branson shows that are open for hot winter fun will be showcased in one big show at the Jim Stafford Theatre on Feb. 11. It will give folks a sampling of what Branson has to offer.

"It may be harder for a lot of these shows to stay closed in January and February because, as we get more and more people into town, there's revenue there," Ross said.

One big reason for more people in town is Branson's new convention center that just opened in August. Ross says the facility has dates booked into the next three or four years.

"People don't spend all their time at the convention center. They want to get out and see what's available in the local community and, obviously, Branson has more than most local communities," said Ross.

Besides all the entertainment, he encourages people to visit Branson's many museums, including Ripley's Believe it or Not, The Titanic, and the Ralph Foster Museum at College of the Ozarks, and, of course, all the places to shop and eat.

Branson Celebrates the Holidays

Christmas in the Ozarks has become big business for Branson. The southwest Missouri town of 7,435 welcomes the holiday season with dancing Santas, reindeer, penguins and millions of twinkling lights.

Twenty years ago, Branson nearly shut down after Halloween until the spring season. But now, November and December are Branson's second busiest period — exceeded only in numbers of visitors by the summer onslaught of families with kids interested in miniature golf, bumper cars and boats, go-karts and swimming in the area's three lakes.

Branson's older visitors are often the town's best customers during the holidays. On a recent Friday night, 24 buses (or coaches, as insiders refer to them) sat outside fiddler Shoji Tabuchi's show.

Another favorite — singer Andy Williams — sings about Christmas being "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year." He'll celebrate his 80th birthday on Dec. 3 with 4,000 of his closest friends in two shows he'll be doing that day at his Moon River Theatre.

And a few other acts include:

— Singer-comedian Jim Stafford gives audience members a reason to ho-ho-ho as he dons a Santa suit each night at his show.

— Fiddler Shoji Tabuchi, who performs holiday tunes, is often surrounded by 7-foot tall reindeer standing on their hind legs. The reindeer return later wearing hula skirts and coconut bras to do another dance with Tabuchi, who wears an aqua blue jacket emblazoned with sequined pineapples.

— Russian comedian Yakov Smirnoff is backed up by Frosty the Snowman, Santa and a Russian dance troupe.

— Country's Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers, Lawrence Welk's Lennon Sisters, "Mr. Banjo" Buck Trent and Mel Tillis spend much of the holidays entertaining busloads of tourists and those who "drive on their own" to Branson. Many of the big-name shows will shut down by Dec. 15 until the spring season begins in early April.

SILVER DOLLAR CHRISTMAS

By far the biggest Christmas spectacular is "An Old Time Christmas" at Silver Dollar City, which switched this year to more energy-efficient lights, cutting its energy usage to 20 percent of what it was a year ago, explained Brad Thomas, park general manager.

This year, the park's Main Street features a five-story special effects Christmas tree covered with 300,000 lights that glow and flash in unison to music that begins at 5:30 p.m. and continues every 15 minutes after that. More than 450,000 lights adorn the surrounding 10 storefronts and 250 cut pine trees. A Gifts of Christmas Light Parade with 80,000 lights winds through the park twice each night. In addition, Silver Dollar City's excellent production of "A Dickens' Christmas Carol" with 14 actors is performed six times daily, along with a "live" nativity scene.

On a recent Saturday night, a wedding party delayed the ceremony to watch the tree-lighting before exchanging vows in the park's picturesque Wilderness Chapel.

Toby Thompson of Topeka, Kan., brings his wife, son and in-laws to Branson each year for Thanksgiving and a family reunion. However this year, the reunion has moved to Fort Worth, Texas. But they took a quick three-day trip to Branson over Veteran's Day weekend, anyway. "We enjoy coming here for the Christmas activities and staying in a log cabin," he said. "The area is just so beautiful that we love coming here. And the women love to go shopping here."

The Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce survey confirms that 88 percent of its nearly 8 million visitors last year report going shopping in Branson compared with 84 percent attending shows, 36 percent going to theme parks and 33 percent to museums. Other tourists went to the lake (29 percent), participated in outdoor activities (8 percent) and played golf (5 percent).

NEW SHOPS

Branson's newest shopping complex, the $420 million Branson Landing, which opened in May last year, has been renamed Branson Winter WonderLanding for the season, with Santa setting up in a 50-foot illuminated Christmas Treehouse with its own fireplace. The outdoor mall along Lake Taneycomo is adorned with 20 million sparkling lights. The $7.5 million Branson Landing fountains are choreographed to holiday songs as they shoot water 120 feet into the air and five cannon blast fireballs above the lake.

Called "Christmas on Main Street," the show features a new 5-Story Special Effects Christmas Tree that blazes to the musical movements of Christmas songs, joined by one million lights on trees, shop fronts and hanging canopies all flashing, as surround-sound fills the Square. The entire park glows with millions of flickering lights and a Holiday Light Parade with colorful, musical floats winds through the streets. The acclaimed Dickens' "Christmas Carol" returns with the special effects said to be one of the best productions in the history of the park. Plus, holiday food, strolling Christmas carolers and the roller coasters are open after dark for the thrill of the lights from above.

The Showboat Branson Belle is bedecked in Christmas finery and charts a course for holiday food and fun on Table Rock Lake though December. Also, the World's Largest Titanic Museum Attraction will be decorated with thousands of merry lights and holiday trim that recall those elegant Christmases past. Your family can discover Branson's newest "Winter Wonder Landing" at the Branson Landing waterfront, featuring a promenade of trendy specialty shopping and dining establishments, the brilliant water and fire spectacular that dances to the sounds of the season in the Town Square and Santa Claus, who has even been known to vacation in Branson himself!

On the first Sunday in December, thousands of people gather in downtown Branson to watch a Christmas parade dedicated to "the true meaning of the season." This year marks the 59th Adoration Parade in Branson, an evening event with dozens of high school bands and lighted floats. The theme has always been "Keeping Christ in Christmas."

"When I started my solo career, I believe God told me to come to Branson and sing with my kids. I'm a Southern California guy, but Christmas in the Ozarks is truly magical," says Righteous Brother Bill Medley, member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, who performs at Dick Clark's American Bandstand Theater.

Branson's Veterans Homecoming, Nov. 5-11, pays tribute to our nation's heroes from all wars and conflicts and all branches of service. For details about this weeklong series of events, tribute shows, reunions and more, click the above link.

Outdoor activities in the Ozarks like fishing, hiking, camping and other outdoor pursuits are year-round opportunities for sporting enthusiasts in the Ozarks. The cool, crisp weather in late autumn and early winter is an appealing time for outdoor activities. Those three pristine lakes never freeze, so they are ideal for fishing for bass, trout, crappie and other species, and there is boating and many other types of water activities even in mid-winter. The mild winters also allow visitors to enjoy the area's dozen championship Golf courses.
