Super Summer Cruise in Branson Announces Changes
The Shepherd of the Hills Super Summer Cruise is moving to a new location. For 2009, the Summer Cruise will not be held on West 76 Country Boulevard. Instead, it will be located on the actual Shepherd of the Hills expressway, shortening the cruise length, as well as the amount of places to park and check out all of the classic cars. Many are on the f ence regarding this decision, but Branson Police Chief Carroll McCullough stated that it was made in conjunction with city officials and Shepherd of the Hills. The decision was the result of concerns voiced over the ability to patrol the cruise when it stretches along 3 miles of Hwy. 76. However, this year’s event is scheduled to be another great event for car lovers and it will include annual events like Show’n’Shine, with over 500 trucks on display at The Shepherd of the Hills Historic Homestead, and the Midnight Cruise, which will feature a parade of vehicles down the Shepherd of the Hills Expressway. 2009 Schedule of Events Thursday, August 6, 2009

The cruise is on Saturday night, August 8th, at Midnight, and will begin at the paved parking lot of Celebration City, proceed up Hwy 376, go through the intersection and drive up The Shepherd of the Hills Expressway and extend the length of the Expressway to Roark Valley Road. The rally point for all cars participating in the cruise will be the Celebration City parking lot, just off of Hwy. 376.

Branson Honors Purple Heart Recipients at Hand In Hand Event
A new, two-day event in Branson will be geared toward honoring a unique group of U.S. military veterans. Hand In Hand: Branson Honors Purple Heart Recipients is scheduled for April 24-25, with several events and ceremonies scheduled. “We could never do enough to honor these wonderful men and women, who have been injured in battle,” said Marlyce Stockinger, with branson.com, which is presenting the event. “This is just something to honor a group of heroes who do not seek a lot of recognition.” Purple Heart recipient Ray Wheeler, who was shot nine times in Vietnam, made an appearance during a press conference announcing the event this week. “I’m glad the Purple Heart recipients are getting the recognition they deserve,” Wheeler said. “They don’t necessarily want it, but it’s good to receive a pat on the back and a ‘thank-you.’” The event will be filled with special events. April 24 •8 a.m.-noon — Registration at Factory Merchants Branson. •2-4 p.m. — Opening Ceremony at the Hamner-Barber Theatre. The guest speaker will be Col. Hemant Thakur, an expert in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Stockinger said Thakur’s presence will be to, hopefully, help some of the veterans. “I spoke to a lot of Purple Heart recipients and many of them said they do want to have fun and laugh during this event,” she said, “but they also want some tools to help them. We want each of them to be able to use what the speaker says.” April 25 8 a.m-noon — Fishing tournament at Moonshine Beach. Participants will have their name drawn from Purple Heart recipients who registered on April 24. Each of the 25 participants will be paired up with a professional fisherman from the Central Pro-Am Tour. 9 a.m. — Purple Heart recipients and one guest will be able to join in the fun at the Missouri Wine Festival, which is being held at Chateau on the Lake all day on April 25. While they wait for the fishermen to return, they will be able to sample various wines, cheeses and chocolates. 2-4 p.m. — The Hand in Hand Entertainment Show at the Hamner Barber Theatre will include a variety of Branson performers entertaining the heroes and their families. 6-7 p.m. — The Purple Mountain Majesty Twilight Ceremony will be held at Branson Landing. It will include hearing from guest speaker Maj. Tony Rose, a 9-11 Pentagon survivor and Purple Heart recipient. “This is going to be a wonderful two days,” Stockinger said. “We need to have as many people show up for these events as possible. Purple Heart recipients need to know that they are appreciated.” Purple Heart recipient Aaron Wintterle, who was wounded in Iraq, said it’s important to bring as many recipients to the event as possible. “I was reluctant to come forward and talk,” Wintterle said, “but I really think it will help others. It’s going to be a good event.” Information courtesy of Branson Daily News Labels: Branson_Special_Events
Spring Comes Early to Butterfly Palace in Branson
Spring has come early to the Butterfly Palace and Rainforest Adventure in Branson. The attraction is decorated with hundreds of colorful tulips and tropical butterflies fluttering from flower to flower. “There is something delightful about tulips,” said Dianna Herschend, owner of the Butterfly Palace. “They are simple and fragile, yet enduring, and when you have hundreds and hundreds of them along a path, it really is a magical, fun stroll.” Tulips have an extraordinary history of economic impact and even mania. They have steadfastly remained one of the world’s most popular flowers since their introduction to Europe in the 1560s. Before their commercial evolution, tulips were wild flowers that grew mostly in central and western Asia. Tulips were cultivated in Turkey as early as 1000 AD and were the featured flower in the gardens of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire by 1556. The Ottoman Empire’s wealthiest time period, 1703-1730, is called the “Tulip Era.” Although tulips did not originate in the Netherlands, it’s easy to understand the misconception. The Dutch have been the primary cultivators and sellers of tulips for more than 400 years. Holland currently produces more than 3 billion bulbs annually. Unfortunately, just like the 1920s stock market crash, the tulip market crashed in 1637, simply because the cost of a single bulb had become so exorbitant. The crash ruined the finances and lives of many who had invested such extravagant sums on tulip bulbs that were still in the ground. As legend has it, red tulips represent a declaration of true love. Cream-colored tulips convey the message, “I will love you forever.” Labels: Branson_Special_Events
Merle Haggard & Gene Watson Team Up for Country Supershow
It will be an incredible night when two of the most amazing voices in Country Music History share the stage at the Tri-Lakes Center June 11, 2009. Country Music Hall of Fame Member Merle Haggard and fellow legend Gene Watson will fill the night with a seemingly endless list of hit songs. Merle Haggard draws huge crowds around the world, and Gene Watson’s November concert in Branson was a sell out, so this is sure to be a hot ticket. Bob Cannella with Up Close Concerts says this event took a lot of planning but it will be worth it. “Each year we survey concert goers in the Branson area, and Merle and Gene always top the list of artists country fans want to see. We have taken two amazing performers who draw massive crowds on their own, and created one of the biggest shows ever to hit Branson. We are also keeping ticket prices at a level you would expect to pay to see just one of these legendary artists, with prices starting at $35.00.” Tickets are available at the Tri-Lakes Center box office, 2527 State Highway 248, or by calling 417-336-0219. Cannella says, “Merle had a great time at his show last August in Branson, and Gene enjoyed performing for a standing room only crowd in the fall, so we’re not sure who will have a better time on June 11, the audience or Merle and Gene.” Information courtesy of The Tri-Lakes Tribune Labels: Branson_Special_Events

Vintage Valentines on Display at Butterfly Palace
Valentine’s Day is a special day to show affection to the one you love. Many cards are delivered each year and it has been going on for decades. A Valentine art exhibit that will take you back in time will be on display at the Butterfly Palace and Rainforest Adventure Feb. 1-18. Sincerely Yours: The Art of Love, celebrates the centuries-old tradition of exchanging valentine greetings on the day known as St. Valentine’s Day. Before the days of mass-produced Valentine greetings, many Valentines were small works of art, lovingly handcrafted for that special someone. The exhibit presents dozens of these antique creations from the Victorian era. “As popular as scrapbooking has become in recent years, it was even more popular during the late 1800s and early 1900s,” said Dianna Herschend, owner of The Butterfly Palace and Rainforest Adventure. “It became quite the social activity. Guests were invited for refreshments and to spend hours admiring the host’s scrapbooks,” she said. The works of art range from large and elaborate mechanicals with intricate designs of foil and paper lace, to simple postcards which cost just a penny. The postcard Valentines include “vinegar Valen-tines” — Valentines with bad attitudes and such poor manners the U.S. Post Office eventually refused to deliver them. The exhibit celebrates both the art and history of Valentine’s Day, from how the day was named for St. Valentine, to the evolution of the designs of these beautiful vintage Valentines. Herschend said Valentine scrapbooking became very competitive. “Everyone wanted to have the most impressive scrapbook, so the practice is largely responsible for the preservation of the originals from so long ago,” she said. Branson's Ozark Mountain Spring Steps into the Spotlight
More than 400 people braved snow flurries and freezing temperatures Friday to dream about spring. College of the Ozarks Athletic Director Al Waller led the crowd in a cheer during the kickoff event for Ozark Mountain Spring at Branson Convention Center. “Ten years ago, most Branson businesses didn’t open their doors until April,” Waller said. “While the (NAIA D-II) national tournament has helped the tourism season start earlier in March, this new idea will hopefully solidify March as the kickoff to the tourism season.” Waller was one of several area community and business leaders speaking on behalf of Ozark Mountain Spring, a new marketing effort involving more than 40 events from March through April. The events will be highlighted by an appearance from Al Roker, of the “Today Show.” Called America’s favorite weatherman, Roker will be in town to judge the Great American Pie Show. “Perhaps it’s time for a change,” said Mary Kellogg, with the Titanic Museum. “We have the opportunity to promote something new, which involves the basics of our economy — great shows, restaurants, lodging and attractions.” The Branson Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce has worked on the idea since August. “We’ve actually been looking for a new spring concept for several years,” said Ross Summers, the chamber’s president and CEO. “It is very encouraging to see this many folks show up. The community is looking for something new and support is crucial.” Information courtesy of Branson Daily News Labels: Branson_Special_Events

Bright Lights of Branson Bring Holiday Cheer
Driving through the Branson Area Festival of Lights, one might catch themselves singing “The 12 Days of Christmas.” Thousands of lights illuminate the way with displays of three french hens, two turtle doves and, of course, a partridge in a pear tree. Hundreds of other displays are brightly lit on the mile-long drive. The journey begins off Shepherd of the Hills Expressway and Expressway Lane, across from the Sight and Sound Theatre. North Pole Productions, which works with Christmas light displays mainly in the eastern states of New York and Connecticut, has been hired by the Branson Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce to set up and maintain the display during the holiday season. It took a little bit of time to put it all together. “It took a month to set it up and another week to make sure everything was working right,” said Carla Heinen, with North Pole Productions. “This is the second year we have been here.” Visitors from Branson and out of state have enjoyed the Christmas lights for many years. Ed Werth, of Indianapolis, Ind., said he and his wife look forward to seeing the lights when they visit Branson. “We’ve seen them before,” he said. “This year, they looked great.” It’s a job filled with joy, Heinen says. “We’re really proud of our work,” she said. “You know people are happy when they are singing at the end.” The Festival of Lights drive-through is open until Dec. 31. The drive-through cost for family vehicles is $10. A family season pass is $15. Mini-coaches, church vans and limousine are $25. Full-sized motorcoaches are $50. White Flight Arrives for the Holidays at The Butterfly Palace
Thousands of white tropical butterflies are calling The Butterfly Palace home again for the holiday season. This year's visitors are called Paper Kites, said Sara Bolend, general manager of The Butterfly Palace. "There are 20 species of white butterflies, the ones we have are from Malaysia, " she said. The signature white butterflies have noteworthy company this year as they take center stage alongside a very unusual holiday exhibition called "White Flight." Living statues adorn the walkways of the rain forest. The art form, reminiscent of mimes, was historically practiced during medieval and Renaissance times, positioned in elaborate decoration, along procession routes visiting rulers followed as they entered ancient cities. "We wanted to add a different element this year," Bolend said. "The statues are interactive and make for a great photo opportunity." White Flight is exclusively available for the holidays through January 15. Visitors will enjoy the thousands of butterflies, twinkling lights and a giant poinsettia tree. "Our intention is to ensure that our traditional 'White Flight' experience will offer something new each year, as well as bring back the popular elements that our guests love," said Diana Herschend, owner of The Butterfly Palace. "It takes a lot of talent for our artists to consistently create the question in the observers mind - is she real?" Information courtesy of Branson Daily News Labels: Branson_Special_Events

Branson Ready to Welcome Veterans
The Tri-Lakes Area is just one week away from the nation’s largest celebration of the contributions of America’s veterans. “This is just a wonderful week for veterans and their families,” said Branson Veterans Task Force board member Tom Goldsworthy. “It’s the greatest feeling in the world to be a part of remembering veterans.” “A Veterans Homecoming,” Branson’s week-long celebration, will engulf the Branson area from Nov. 5-11, and will include numerous special events and recognition for America’s heroes. “This is one of my favorite times of the year,” said Marlyce Stockinger, who helped organize veterans events for several years. “This gives us a chance to really say ‘thank you’ to the veterans. They need to know how much they mean to us and that we appreciate everything they have done for our freedom.” This year’s veterans activities begin at 10 a.m. Nov. 5 at the Welk Resort Center for the opening of the Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial — a scaled-down replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall that stands in Washington D.C. The official opening ceremonies for A Veterans Homecoming will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Mansion Entertainment and Media Center. Holiday Light Displays Bring Christmas Spirit to Branson
Soon, the Tri-Lakes Area will be awash in brightly colored Christmas light displays. One of the centerpieces of the area’s holiday lights celebration is the Branson Area Festival of Lights Drive-Through. “We are very excited about this year’s display,” said Kathleen Bullock, director of tourism development for the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce. The drive-through display, which is open from Nov. 1-Dec. 31, is located at Shepherd of the Hills Expressway and Expressway Lane in Branson. Bullock said the mile-long drive-through boasts more than 230 separate displays with more than 1 million lights. “This is definitely something different, this year,” she said. “About 95 percent of the displays are new. It is really something to see.” The display is open from dusk until 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from dusk until midnight on Friday and Saturday. There are also three other major holiday lights displays. • Trail of Lights — The Trail of Lights, which runs from Nov. 1-Dec. 31, is a drive-through animation display that will carry you into the very heart of Christmas. The trail winds its way through the historic 160-acre Shepherd of the Hills Homestead, and will take you down the famous “Trail That Nobody Knows How Old” into a holiday wonderland. The trail also includes millions of multi-colored Christmas lights. • Old Time Christmas at Silver Dollar City — This annual event, which runs from Nov. -Dec. 30, has been named one of the top 10 places in the country to have a bright Christmas by USA Today and the A&E Network. Along with the millions of lights all over the park, this celebration features the five-story special effects Christmas Tree, adorned with more than 250,000 lights coordinated to blaze to the musical movements of Christmas songs. Families will also love the Holiday Light Parade. • The Enchanted Forest — Located at the U.S Army Corps of Engineers Campground on Indian Point Road in Stone County, the Enchanted Forest drive-through holiday light display is made up of more than 500,000 lights. It is scheduled to be open from Nov. 10-Dec. 31. There is no admission fee for this display, which will be open from dusk to midnight each day. BransonFest Replaced By New Event - Ozark Mountain Spring
After 16 years of kicking off the spring entertainment season, BransonFest is history. Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce Director of Public Relations Lynn Berry said the five-day BransonFest, once filled with entertainers, businesses and crafters, is being replaced with a longer event called Ozark Mountain Spring. “We are working on ideas to bring more events and festivals to that time period and are very excited about a similar branding campaign for the springtime that we enjoy with Ozark Mountain Christmas,” Berry said. For years, the Dutton family has showcased its talents at BransonFest. “BransonFest has done very good things for us in the past,” said Judith Dutton, assistant theater manager. “I’m sad to see it go, but excited to see what the new program has to offer.” Berry said it made sense to cover the entire season. “Things just needed to be more than five days,”she said. The new events will extend the opportunity to bring more people to Branson and stir up more interest in what Branson has to offer, Berry said. “How successful Ozark Mountain Christmas is something we wanted to emulate for the spring,” she said. When asked if attendance at BransonFest had dropped, Berry said “a little,” but that “we continued to see a strong turnout.” Berry said she didn’t believe the BransonFest event had lost money in the past. The chamber recently received $150,000 in funding from the Tourism Community Enhancement District to fund Ozark Mountain Spring. Berry said the chamber would like to have an event or festival every weekend throughout the three month season. “We can’t promise for 2009, but we’ll get a good start,” she said. Branson Welcomes Vets during Annual Veterans Homecoming
Veterans and active-duty military personnel will get the opportunity to see and meet Lt. Col Oliver North this November. North, one of this nation’s most popular veterans, will highlight Branson’s Annual Veterans Homecoming events. Once again, veterans from all over the United States will travel to Branson to celebrate its 15th annual Veteran’s Homecoming from Nov. 5-11. North’s appearances will include being the keynote speaker at the U.S. Marine Corps’ 233rd birthday party and an appearance from 8-10 a.m. on Nov. 11, for a breakfast event at a location yet to be determined. This year, the headquarters and Veterans Village will be at the new Tactical Operations Center at the Branson Convention Center. This year’s theme is “Branson Doesn’t Forget Our Military and Their Families.” There may also be a special tribute to former Branson Mayor Lou Schaefer, who recently passed away, according to Veterans Homecoming chairman Steve Weyher. Since 1993, thousands of veterans have traveled to Branson during this week-long tribute designed to honor service men and women. The homecoming week also means more tourism for Branson. Last year, approximately 2,500 veterans registered, but at least 50,000 veterans came to Branson for the tribute. “The city of Branson anticipates the homecoming each year,” said Jerry Adams, Branson’s communications director. “We have plenty of lodging facilities in Branson and restaurants to accommodate the influx of veterans and we welcome the opportunity to show our veterans the honor and respect that they deserve.” A free lunch for veterans and active-duty personnel will be served daily at the tent in the Belk parking lot at Branson Landing. Registration is also free and will be held at the Grand Country Square and at the Convention Center from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Veterans who register will be included in daily drawings for special prizes. “Registration is so important,” said Arlen Lipper, Veterans Task Force office manager and retired U.S. Air Force and Army veteran. “This allows us to know how many are in town and who came. So many are afraid that we will share their personal information, but we really keep that private.” Lipper expects an increase in the number of veterans who will visit this year and has had a large number of phone calls from people who have never been to Branson and are coming for the first time. Veterans can look forward to several days of special events such as a World War II encampment, Showboat Branson Belle Show and Dinner, an opening ceremony, a Rose Petal ceremony to honor women veterans, a Gold Star, Blue Star Mothers and Gold Star Wives Luncheon, Korean War Veterans Association reunion, and the United States 233rd Marine Corps birthday party. All former and active duty veterans are invited, as well the general public. For more information, call Lipper at The Branson Veterans Task Force office at (417) 337-8387. Branson Olde Time Fiddle Festival Slated for Weekend
After taking a break in ‘07, Branson’s Olde Time Fiddle Festival will return Saturday with dozens of musicians vying for titles. “We have one fiddler who is only 6 years old, and a number of family groups,” said Dawn Erickson, director of the event’s sponsor, the Downtown Branson Main Street Association. The youngest fiddler, from Kirbyville, will be joined by four siblings. Fiddlers from as far away as New Zealand have expressed interest in the festival; so far, about 45 have registered and many will do so Saturday morning, Erickson said. Competition begins at 10 a.m. near the fountain at Branson Landing. Finals will be held at 7 p.m. If thunderstorms play a factor, the festival will be held indoors at the K-Life building on 5th Street. “We’ve been watching the weather very closely,” Erickson said. The last fiddle festival — the 19th annual — was held in 2006. “It had always been held downtown on the stone steps, but the Landing is not conducive to a ticketed event and we always charged admission,” Erickson said. This year, for the first time, the event will be free to the public. “We raised about $10,000 and the city donated $10,000 for marketing,” Erickson said. “A number of local businesses are also sponsors of the event.” Branson Landing is also contributing $3,000 in services and equipment. Prize money and awards will total $4,000. Even though the contest and awards ceremony will be held at the Landing, the entire downtown district will be filled with performances, Erickson said. “It’s just going to be a lot of fun,” she said. “We’re expecting to see a lot of sidewalk sales.” Information & Image courtesy of Branson Daily News Labels: Branson_Special_Events
Tour of Missouri Rides into Branson September 10
A ‘deceivingly tougher’ Tour of Missouri will challenge the field of 120 worldclass cyclists from 15 elite professional teams when they line up for the September 8th – 14th Tour of Missouri. Race organizers announced back in June the overall race finish city will be St. Louis. Each of the seven courses for the weeklong event were announced by Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder, race director Jim Birrell and two time stage winner Ivan Dominguez of the U.S.’s top domestic squad Toyota United Pro Cycling Team. “Again, the great state of Missouri will play host to these worldclass athletes from more than 20 countries this September,” said Lt. Governor Kinder. “This year, we’ve worked to make the course more challenging and with a few new twists, including new terrain, new cities, homage to our Armed Forces on September 11th and another grand finale in St. Louis.” After several preevents in the Kansas City metro area, Stage 1, Monday, September 8th, will start in new host city St. Joseph, and pose a bigger challenge for cyclists through rolling terrain along the Missouri River before a circuit finish in Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza district for the second straight year. Stage 2, Tuesday, September 9th, will be the most flat but longest stage, routing from Clinton to Springfield. It is a remake of last year’s course, which proved to be the decisive stage of the race after a long breakaway put race champion George Hincapie into the race lead for good. Stage 3, Wednesday, September 10th, remakes last year’s time trial course in Branson, and has been cited as perhaps the most pivotal stage of the race, starting at The Branson Landing and finishing at Shepherd of the Hills. Stage 4, Thursday, September 11th, is a new course that will take cyclists from Lebanon to new host city Rolla in south central Missouri. Cyclists will be challenged by six sizeable hills, in perhaps the toughest stage, to the finish on a college campus at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. The race also will feature a sprint through Fort Leonard Wood Military Reservation to commemorate U.S. Armed Forces. Stage 5, Friday, September 12th, a new course, features a start in the quaint town of St. James, a new host city, and routes north to an earlyevening finish in front of the Capitol Building in Jefferson City. Cyclists will race up a tough 300meter climb to the finish line. Added Birrell: “In response to surveying a lot of the cyclists from last year’s race, we’ve made it a bit more challenging with some more hills,” said Birrell. “While Missouri doesn’t have any major mountains, it is a very hilly state. We have incorporated some of the big rollers within the state and come up with some very good courses. One of our course advisors was Kevin Livingston, originally from Missouri, who rode at a worldclass level in Europe for almost a decade and was a great climber. He pointed us in the right direction.” Stage 6, and routing along the twisting highways near the Missouri River and feature the two longest climbs of the tour on Schluersburg and Old Colony Roads before passing through the city of O’Fallon and finishing near the same location in St. Charles along the Missouri River. Stage 7, Sunday, September 14th, will feature the circuit used from last year’s final stage in St. Louis, but will have several new features. The race will be moved from Union Station to a start and finish in front of City Hall on Tucker and Market Streets. The circuit will be stretched to 14 miles and include a large section through Forest Park and feature the Grand Basin and the Art Museum hill. Last year’s inaugural race suited Dominguez, who won the opening stage in Kansas City and the closing stage in St. Louis, and has become a big fan of the Tour of Missouri despite the tougher terrain. “As a sprinter, I like the flat terrain, so more hills are not necessarily so good for me,” said Dominguez, who won more races last year on the North American circuit than any racer. “But, there are three good stages for me in Kansas City, Springfield and St. Louis, so, I am excited. And, it is always a challenge to go up against some of the top sprinters from the European pro teams. Last year’s race was very good for my ToyotaUnited teammates. There were a lot of spectators, especially for a new race. And, it’s always good to win. Of course, Kansas City and St. Louis are now my new favorite towns.” Information courtesy of Tour of Missouri Labels: Branson_Special_Events

Branson Entertainers Plan Fundraiser for Flood Victims
Branson entertainers, vendors and community members will join forces on Saturday to give big to Midwest flood victims. “Branson Gives Big” includes a family festival on the patio of Branson Star Theatre and a special concert. Proceeds from the festival, the concert, as well as from all the day’s shows at Branson Star Theatre, will benefit the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, as well as assist flood-victim families visiting Branson. The one-time concert will include Jim Stafford, The Lennon Sisters, Jim Barber, The Hughes Brothers, Doug Gabriel, Dave and Denise Hamner, the cast of Breaking Up is Hard To Do, a musical featuring the songs of Neil Sedaka, Delena Ditto, David Lomascola, Gail Lennon and the Buzz Boys, Redkneckers and The Branson Divas. Linda Buckles, one of the event coordinators, described bringing together so many Branson stars to benefit Midwest flood victims as “amazing.” “This is just the kind of town that does that,” she said. The show begins at 3 p.m. The family festival, which gets under way at 11 a.m., will include concessions, vendors, inflatables, games and prizes, and free outdoor-stage entertainment. “We are very excited about the outpouring from the Branson community and we are looking forward to a very fun event that is so much more special because all the vendors are donating a portion of their proceeds to the relief effort,” said co-event coordinator Angela Walker. Buckles has been working to put faces on the victims and has arranged to bring five families affected by the flooding in Iowa to Branson for a free all-expense paid getaway. The families will be attending the day’s festivities. “The community has given rooms, meals, show and attraction tickets — all free for these families. We are so grateful, however we do still need to pay for the travel expenses these families and are actively looking for donations to accomplish this,” Buckles said. “We are asking for help from the community to raise funds for the travel expenses and any amount will be appreciated.” Buckles has visited with each of the families that will be arriving in town later this week. She said several have called this getaway a “miracle,” and something they could not have afforded to do, but truly appreciate at this time. Two of the five families have lost everything in the flooding. “It is gut-wrenching,” Buckles said. Fiddle Festival Returning to Downtown Branson
The 20th Annual Downtown Branson Fiddle Festival to be held on August 23, 2008 promises to be an exciting event, with new features including a Celebrity Pie Contest and, for the first time, free admission to all performances. The music begins at 10 a.m. and will continue into the evening. The contestants and performers will be playing the various styles of traditional music that early settlers brought with them to the Ozarks. This year, there will be performances all day long on the street corners in Historic Downtown Branson along with sidewalk sales and, of course, small town Main Street shopping. Just down the street, the Branson Landing Town Square will host the competition, returning the contest to its longtime home on the banks of Lake Taneycomo. In addition to contestants from around the country, there will be guest appearances by some of Branson's best performers, including some who competed as youngsters in earlier Branson fiddle contests. The new Celebrity Pie Contest will bring out some of the finest cooks among Branson's celebrities. Mayor Raeanne Presley and Dee Dee Lennon of the Lennon Sisters have already signed on. Downtown restaurant owners will judge the pies. For the first time, this will be a free festival, thanks to the many generous sponsors. The fiddle festival is an important tradition in Branson, said Steve Hartley, owner of Dick's 5 & 10 in downtown Branson. "It honors the area's heritage, and is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike," Hartley said. "When people think of Branson, they think of these kinds of events, the down-homey type of thing," Hartley said. "Many places have lost that." Mary Jane Rice, the receptionist at the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, said she gets a lot of calls about the Fiddle Festival every year. "People call from all over, but mostly from out in the rural areas within about 100 miles of here," Rice said. "A lot of folks just like to get out and play and meet up with people who have a common interest in playing the fiddle. And the competition for young people coming up is a big part of it." Marc Williams, one of the owners of Branson Landing, said he's pleased that Branson Landing is one of the hosts of the Fiddle Festival. "This festival represents the Ozarks Americana that's such an important part of our heritage," Williams said. Competition will be in five divisions: ages nine and younger, age 10 through 16, age 60 and older, an open category for any age and the new "Cross Tuning" category. Cross tuning refers to a way of tuning the fiddle that allows it to mimic the drone of the bagpipe, a style of playing once very popular at the old time dances. Fiddles were originally brought to the Ozarks by early settlers because they were easily portable yet were quite loud and suited for dance music. More than $4,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded. The Fiddle Festival is being presented through the cooperation of organizations including the Downtown Branson Main Street Association, the Historic Downtown Branson Business Owners, the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, Branson Landing and the City of Branson. For information about entering, attending, or sponsorship of the event, please contact the Downtown Branson Main Street Association at 417-334-1548 or http://www.downtownbranson.org/. Starship to Perform at the Branson Landing
Mickey Thomas says it’s hard for him to believe he has been doing anything for 30 years, but for the last three decades he has indeed been the frontman for Starship, which will play a free concert at Branson Landing’s Town Square next Friday at 8:30 p.m. “When I first joined Jefferson Starship, I wasn’t sure if it fit the musical direction I wanted to go in,” said Thomas, who became part of Jefferson Starship in 1979 and stayed on when original member Paul Kantner left in 1984 and took the band’s name with him. “I thought, ‘I’ll give it two albums, three years.’ But you turn around and it’s been 30 years.” Starship saw its share of number one hits in the 1980s, with “We Built This City,” “Sara,” and “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” reaching the peak spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 from ‘85-‘87. And Thomas is at it again. Earlier this year, Starship released a new single, “Get Out Again,” which Thomas said went to number 38 on the Adult Contemporary chart. It is just a single for now, but Thomas has plans for a full album, one he intends to make between gigs. “We hope to get in the studio enough to have it out by October,” he said. Thomas said the music industry has changed since he first began, mainly due to the Internet and the way people access music. “It’s sad to see so many great bands come along and get put on a shelf,” he said. In his opinion, the staying power of bands like The Who and other classic rockers is turning into a thing of the past. “We’re not going to see that kind of longevity anymore,” he said. But he does have a taste for a more modern take on rock and roll, saying he listens to Muse, Collective Soul, Radiohead and My Chemical Romance. And whether or not Starship would have the chops to make it through if they were getting started remains to be seen. “Who knows?” Thomas said. “It’s so tough now. There’s a thousand American Idols but there aren’t too many great rock bands coming down the pike these days.” Other changes Thomas mentioned include the audience at live shows. “What I might see now is generations. I may see three generations all in the same audience.” Thomas said he’s looking forward to playing in Branson, having performed here before in the ‘80s and again in the ‘90s. “It’s going to be a great show,” he said. “Branson is heavily based in music and entertainment. Downtown Branson Plumb Nellie Event Starts Friday
More than 150 crafters will exhibit their work during the 35th Annual Plumb Nellie Arts & Crafts Festival in Historic Downtown Branson on May 16-18, 2008. The name "Plumb Nellie" is derived from an Old English expression that described street fairs in olden times when local farmers brought their produce and home crafts into the town square to sell. "Plumb" comes from the carpenter's plumb line that is used to be certain everything is square, and combined with "Nearly" (Nellie) it means perfectly nearly. It's a bit redundant and ungrammatical, but the old timers used to say "You can find "plumb nellie" anything at the fair." The phrase also can be used to dramatize any event or incident that is particularly memorable, such as "I plumb nellie fainted when that big dog came running after me." Crafters and artists from all over the Midwest will participate. The show is sponsored by the Downtown Branson Main Street Association to celebrate heritage and home crafts, the culture of arts and crafts, and the skills of individuals who want to keep the traditions of the past alive. Shoppers will find a wide variety of items including wood crafts, quilts and clothing, crocheted and knitted items, hats, purses and ladies accessories, toys, floral arrangements, ironwork and collectible dolls, plus many more. Food booths are also on the site, offering an eclectic supply of goodies and old favorites. On Saturday, the Outrageous Dog Show will delight everyone. Any dog is eligible, and may be entered in categories such as Best Dressed Dog, Owner Look-alike, Longest Ears, Waggiest Tail, Most Talented, etc. Craft booths will be in two large tents, located in the center of Downtown Branson at Commercial and Atlantic streets. The show is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is FREE. While visiting Branson, those in the pet competition will want a pet friendly Branson hotel to stay at during their visit. Be sure to make reservations early for better savings. Tour of Missouri will Return to Branson
Branson will, once again, grab a part of the cycling world spotlight in 2008. “Branson has the unique opportunity once again to host the Tour of Missouri Time Trial on Sept. 10. If you combine world-class cycling along with our live entertainment, outdoor and lake recreation and our famous Ozarks hospitality, this really sets Branson apart,” said Ross Summers, President/CEO of the Branson/Lakes Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. On Wednesday, Gov. Matt Blunt and Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder announced the itinerary for the 2008 Tour of Missouri. The tour, spanning seven days and 623 miles, will begin Sept. 8 with a 90-mile road race from St. Joseph to Kansas City. Rolla, St. James, and Herman have been added as new stops but the Tour will return to Clinton, Springfield, Branson, Lebanon, Jefferson City, and St. Charles before concluding beneath the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. Last year’s Tour of Missouri had an economic impact of $26.2 million, demonstrating its value and benefits to Missouri. The estimated turnout was 367,566. “The Tour of Missouri was an enormous success and generated a wave of energy that traveled across our state for a superb week of fun, entertainment and economic benefit,” Kinder said. “The Tour was six action-packed days of international professional cycling that was enjoyed by thousands of out-of-state visitors and by Missourians of all ages.” Kinder said he anticipates the state’s share of race costs to again hover near the $1 million mark. He also expressed optimism that the race could attract a corporate title sponsor, something it lacked last year.“We expect to have more (corporate support) than last year and at a higher value,” he said. Auditions for "America's Got Talent" comes to Branson
This summer America could be reminded of the talent that Branson has got. “ America’s Got Talent” will be making its way to Branson for a showcase on February 20, where more Branson natives will be scouted to follow in the footsteps of The Duttons, Johnny Lonestar and Jason Pritchett. “This is just another great opportunity for our entertainers to be nationally noted for their talents,” Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce director of public relations, Lynn Berry said. Entertainers wanting to audition to try and win the show’s $1 million prize are asked to send a message to agtprocasting@gmail.com. The email should include a phone number, a picture of the interested performer or group, a description of the act, the city where the entertainers live, a Web site or Myspace address and any other interesting information about the performer. In the last two years “America’s Got Talent” has succeeded in bringing back the variety format to the forefront of American culture, by showcasing a colorful array of hopeful future stars including singers, dancers, comedic performances and other unique acts featuring performers of all ages. Last year the Tri-Lakes Area received an immeasurable amount of publicity from the program as Branson alum strutted their stuff on stage in front on millions of viewers each week. After the taping of the show concluded, a number of the entertainers featured on the program made their way to Branson to perform in a series of special shows at the Dutton Family Theater. Tourism officials are hoping the show gives a similar boon to the “Live Entertainment Capital of the World” in 2008. “I think at one time, five out of 20 acts on the show were from Branson,” Berry said. “This will hopefully just be another opportunity for the rest of the world to find out what all Branson has to offer.” Information courtesy of Branson Daily NewsLabels: Branson_Special_Events, Duttons
Officials Preparing for 16th Annual BransonFest
BransonFest will make a return to 76 Country Boulevard this year, but that’s not the only thing that will be different. Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce Director of Tourism Development Krystal Simon said that the move of BransonFest to Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theater and Area 57 is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the additions made to the 16th annual event, which will be held April 8-12. “I think probably the biggest thing that we are going to be doing different this year is having corporate sponsors,” Simon said. “We’re hoping to get both local and national sponsors.” She said having those companies on board as partners will give the event an increased budget. “Because of the sponsorships we should be able to try some new things that we haven’t been able to do in the past because we couldn’t afford it,” Simon said. Traditional elements of BransonFest will also still be a part of the festival. The Hospitality and Business Expo will once again return featuring a variety of booths from area theaters, attractions and businesses. The Arts, Culture & Heritage Area will again showcase Ozark Mountain art, culture and history presented by nationally recognized local artists displaying the fruits of their craftsmanship. The Great American Entertainment Tent will have a new distinction this year as each night of the free entertainment played there will have a theme. “We’re doing that this year so people who like gospel or bluegrass or rock n’ roll music will know what night to come on to hear their favorite kind of music,” Simon said. BransonFest will once again continue showcasing the various musical acts in Branson in a series of concerts. “One of the big names that will be performing at BransonFest this year is Joe Diffie,” Simon said. “He’s new to Branson and is a big name.” Information courtesy of Branson Daily News Labels: Branson_Special_Events

Holiday Shopping at Dick's 5 &10 Store in Branson
If you are old enough to remember shopping at a "dime store" with parents or grandparents, Dick's Oldtime 5 and 10 in downtown Branson, Missouri will delight every sense. This old-fashioned dime store operates daily in the nostalgic downtown district of one of America's favorite resort cities. Christmas shoppers will love Dick's Oldtime 5 and 10 because shopping here is like a trip to the past. The store has been held the same location on a corner for more than fifty years. Every narrow aisle is filled with treasures that someone on your holiday gift list is sure to appreciate. Upon entering the store, many visitors are stopped by the sight of working model trains that travel the rails above their heads. Others pause because the sheer amount of merchandise crammed into a single store space is astonishing. Each aisle is stocked with merchandise from floor to high above the average shopper's head. Dick's claims to stock more than 40,000 nostalgic items. The varied stock includes everything from collectible figurines, toys, games, clothing, metal mesh fly swatters, pots and pans, cooking supplies, linen goods including "stamp goods" ready to embroider, novelties of every description, old-fashioned candy, and more. Remember the toys you played with as a child or dreamed of finding on Christmas morning? Most of them can be found at Dick's 5 and 10. Simple toys like jacks, rag dolls, checkerboards, stick horses, and more line the aisles here. Don't look for the electronic marvels that can be found in every toy and discount department stores because they are not here. Simple china tea sets and toy cars that rely on boy powder instead of batteries are the norm. If a cook is on your Christmas list, check out the wide selection of cooking tools and accessories. Aprons like Grandma used to wear are in stock everyday and so are things like hand-powered cheese graters, meat grinders, utility forks, and coffeepots that make coffee on top of the stove, no electric outlet needed! Guys will find tools to their boys-at-heart content and gals can find something that their man doesn't have in his toolbox here. From the basics like hammers and screwdrivers to various saws and fishing gear, there is a wide selection of equipment for the male members of the family. Cloth diapers - the real thing - are found here near rubber duckies for baby's bath. Baby shoes that don't have designer names can be located. Stuffed animals, ladies stocking garters, the kind of candy that grandparents remember from before World War II, wind chimes, novelty cards, Betty Boop and Coke memorabilia, and enough Elvis artifacts for the most devoted fan are here at Dick's 5 and 10. Find things you forgot existed until you see them on the shelf here and give gifts with nostalgic value this season. These are not replicas but practical, working items that can be used everyday or put on display with pride. Cards that cater to the past can be found along with bobby pins, scented talc powders, hats, candles, decorations, and everything but the kitchen sink (which might well be tucked away in some corner of the store). Wear comfortable shoes and plan to spend hours shopping the vintage goods at Dick's 5 and 10 in Branson. The store is located downtown at 103 West Main Street or at the corner of Main and commercial. Branson Festival of Lights display Holiday Cheer
The Shine of Christmas lights will be coming from a different part of Branson this holiday season. Beginning on November 1 and all aglow through December 31, this year’s drive-through will be located at Shepherd of the Hills Expressway and Expressway Lane, close to the new Sight & Sound Theatre. Experience the magic of an Ozark Mountain Christmas with the Branson Area Festival of Lights 2007 as all of Branson sparkles for the holidays. From fabulous Christmas shows and dazzling lights to spectacular shopping and breathtaking scenic beauty, Branson is a special gift for everyone in your family at this festive time of year. The centerpiece, Branson Area Festival of Lights Drive-Through, will delight children of all ages. Your journey begins with a magical 1-mile drive along a path aglow with over 120 displays. Conveniently located off of Shepherd of the Hills Expressway at Expressway Lane, this one-of-a-kind family experience promises to be memorable. Also in the Branson/Lakes Area you can enjoy extraordinary Christmas lighting displays at Silver Dollar City’s Old Time Christmas celebration, the Enchanted Forest on Indian Point Rd. and the Trail of Lights at Shepherd of the Hills. “It’s the perfect facility for the festival to grow, so we can add some new elements over the next couple years,” said Chamber Director of Tourism Development Krystal Simon. 2007 will mark BAFOL’s second year back in Branson after a one-year hiatus in 2005 due to the construction of Target, Home Depot and TJ Maxx in the Branson Hills area. Last year, the festival returned to Branson Hills Parkway but added traffic and the current Wal-Mart Supercenter construction project forced the chamber to look for a new venue for the holiday tradition. “Expressway Lane has all the criteria that we need,” Simon said. “The drive-through was 1.25 miles long last year, so we’ll have plenty of room to make it about that length again. There is plenty of access to electricity, and there will be minimal interference with residential traffic.” Simon all stated that all of the 120 light displays used last year will again be utilized this season. “We’re going to be working with an individual to come up with a new design and configuration for the displays.” The BAFOL Drive-Through will be open daily November 1st through December 31st from 5-11p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5p.m.-midnight on Friday and Saturday. Admission fees for 2007 will be $50 for full-sized motorcoaches, $25 for mini-coaches, church vans and limos, and family vehicles will be $10.
